The Alternative-Metal outfit A Perfect Circle started out as a side project
for Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, who
formed the band in 1997, originally comprising Keenan, guitarists Troy
Van Leeuwen and Billy Howerdel, bass player+violinist Paz Lenchantin and
drummer Josh Freese.
Their debut album, 2000's "Mer De Noms", was a surprise hit,
entering the Billboard Top 200 chart at #4 on the strength of three smash
singles: "3 Libras" peaked at #12 on both Mainstream and Modern
Rock charts, "Judith" crashed into the top 5 in the same charts
and "The Hollow" also became a top 20 hit on the Billboard's
Rock charts.
Keenan subsequently returned to Tool to record
"Lateralus" and Paz Lenchantin joined Billy
Corgan's new band Zwan.
Three years later the group returned with a new line-up, including ex-Marilyn
Manson bass player Jeordie White and guitarist James Iha, ex-member
of The Smashing Pumpkins as the
replacement of Leeuwen who had left to join Queens
Of The Stone Age, "Thirteenth Step" peaked at #2 on The
Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and its first single "Weak And Powerless"
topped both Active and Modern Rock charts, followed the Mainstream Rock
top 3 hit, "The Outsider" plus one more top 20 hit, "Blue".
In late 2004, A Perfect Circle, issued "Emotive" a collection
of several covers chosen bridge three decades of protest songs, spanning
an array of genres such as Punk, Heavy-Metal, Synth-Pop and Classic Rock.
