Beastie Boys

Comprising a three-piece line-up, guitarist Ad-Rock born Adam Horovitz, bassist MCA born Adam Yauch and drummer Mike D born Mike Diamond, Beastie Boys first formed in 1981 in New York City.

They emerged from the underground hardcore-punk scene, two years later, with an independent EP titled "Cookie Puss"; the trio, continued mixing punk with rap, heavy rock using samples and found fame as the first white rap act in New York clubs.
They signed a contract with Def Jam in 1984 and recorded "She's On It", for the soundtrack of the movie "Krush Groove"; in late 1986 the threesome released the explosive debut full-length album, "Licensed To Ill", the record reached the #1 on The Billboard Top 200 chart on the strength of the single "Fight For Your Right" which peaked at #7 on The Billboard Hot 100 and became their first transatlantic hit.
The subsequent album, "Paul's Boutique", released via the major label Capitol, didn't gain the praise and popularity compared to the band's first effort and failed to enter the top 10 in U.S. Albums chart but generated their first Modern Rock top 20 hit single, "Hey Ladies".
After various projects including their own independent label, Grand Royal, the band returned to action in 1992 with "Check Your Head", which soared to #10 on The Billboard 200 Albums chart, its "So What'cha Want" pierced the Top 30 of The Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Two years later, Beastie Boys, with the double-platinum album, "Ill Communication", reached again the top of The Billboard Top 200 chart and also topped the U.K. Albums chart; the set included "Sabotage", their second Modern Rock top 20 hit.
Their next album, "Hello Nasty", issued in the summer of 1998, followed its predecessor into the pole position in U.S. Top 200 chart, spawning "Body Movin" which peaked at #15 on Modern Rock Tracks chart, the top 30 hit "The Negotiation Limerick File" and the #4 "Intergalactic"; the latter won them a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance, during the same ceremony they received a second Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance for their fifth album.
The trio released, a year later, the double-CD, "The Sounds Of Science", a retrospective collection that included unreleased material and three new songs, "Alive" was released as a single and entered The Modern Rock chart at #11.
In 2001 Mike Diamond, officially announced the shut down of the Grand Royal record label citing “mounting debts, decreasing assets and exceedingly harsh industry conditions”.
Beastie Boys resurfaced in mid-2004 with "To The 5 Boroughs", it immediately rose to #1 in North-American Albums charts; its main single "Ch-Check It Out" shot to #1 on The Modern Rock chart and a second single cut, "Triple Trouble", hit #11 in the same chart.
