This Punk-Rock Punk-Pop trio was formed in the early '90s, in Poway,
near San Diego, California USA; originally called Blink, they were comprised
of vocalist+guitarist Tom Delonge, bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Scott
Raynor.
The band began playing in local Punk clubs and recorded in 1993 a self-financed
EP entitled "Fly Swatter".
The next year the trio released under a small record label the full-length
demo "Buddha" which was re-released in 1998 by Kung Fu Records.
Blink's first full-length CD, "Cheshire Cat", was issued in
1995 on Grilled Cheese.
By this point the three-piece act was forced to add the random number
182 when an Irish band, already recording as Blink, threatened to sue
them.
Blink-182 continued gigging constantly and touring the U.S. sharing stages
with Punk bands such as Pennywise and
Less Than Jake.
The subsequent release of "Dude Ranch", took the San Diego-based
outfit into The Billboard 200 Albums chart, the record reached gold status
in both U.S. and Canada; it contained the single "Dammit" which
peaked at #11 on The Modern Rock chart.
The band, after the loss of their former drummer, Scott Raynor, who left
the crew because he wanted to go back to school, added Travis Barker behind
the drum kit and started the recording sessions for their fourth album
which was released in July 1999 on MCA Records; "Enema Of The State"
became their breakthrough LP crashing into The Billboard Top 200 chart
at #9, it spawned a series of smash hits: "What's My Age Again?"
and "Adam's Song" peaked at #2 on The Modern Rock Tracks chart
and "All The Small Things" had nudged higher to #1, eventually
the album became a transatlantic success with worldwide sales of 6 million
copies.
In late 2000 the trio issued a collection of live cuts and previously
unreleased tracks titled "The Mark, Tom And Travis Show (The Enema
Strikes Back)" which hit #8 on the U.S. Top 200 Albums chart, led
by the Modern Rock top 3 hit single "Man Overboard".
The group's fifth studio effort was released in the spring of 2001 and
went straight to #1 on The Billboard 200 Albums chart, the first single,
"The Rock Show", climbed The Modern Rock chart reaching the
#2 spot and was followed by another top 10 hit, "First Date".
During the next year DeLonge and Barker collaborated on a side-project
named Boxcar Racer, the drummer has also
enjoyed success with The Transplants'
self-titled first album, another side-project started in 1999 by Rancid's
frontman Tim Armstrong, Barker and
Rob Aston.
Blink-182 resurfaced in late 2003 with their self-titled album which immediately
stormed American audiences, the record topped the Canadian chart and rose
to #3 in the U.S. spawning no less than three Modern Rock top 10 smash
singles, including the #1 "I Miss You", the #2 "Feeling
This" and "Down".
Blink-182 released their best-of compilation, simply titled "Greatest
Hits", in November 2005, the 17-track set included two bonus items:
"Not Now", an outtake from their eponymous album which hit #18
on The Modern Rock chart and "Another Girl Another Planet".
The trio announced in February 2005 that the band was going on an indefinite
hiatus. From the ashes of Blink-182, two members re-united as (+44)
and Tom Delonge formed a new band of of Punk-Rock veterans: Angels
& Airwaves.
