The London ENGLAND-based Alternative-Rock outfit Bloc Party had its roots
in Union, a band founded by Nigerian-born vocalist+guitarist Kele Okereke
and guitarist Russel Lissack; the two first met in 1998 through mutual
friends, over the next few years, they recruited bassist Gordon Moakes
and drummer Matt Tong and eventually renamed themselves Bloc Party, in
2003.
The quartet inked a deal with Wichita Records in the U.K. who released
their debut full-length album, "Silent Alarm", in early 2005;
the record debuted at #3 on the Official British Pop chart and reached
#114 on the U.S. Billboard 200 while the first single, "So Here We
Are", cracked the top 5 in their homeland and the follow-up "Banquet",
hit the U.K. top 20 and the top 40 of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.
Bloc Party's follow-up to their debut album and its "Silent Alarm
Remixed" counterpart, arrived in stores in February 2007; "A
Weekend In The City", shot to #2 in U.K. and peaked at #12 on the
U.S. The Billboard 200 Albums chart; the first single, "The Prayer"
debuted at #4 on the British Top 40 chart and was followes by the top
20 hit "I Still Remember", the latter also grabbed a #24 on
the U.S. Hot Modern Rock Tracks.
In mid-November 2007 the quartet released a new single titled "Flux".
