This Alternative-Rock band was formed in Seattle, Washington USA, in
December 1991 by vocalist Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist
Bardi Martin and drummer Scott Mercado.
Candlebox, which was less influenced by the grungy sound, debuted with
their explosive 1993 self-titled album; the disc became a surprise success,
reaching the #7 position on The Billboard Top 200 chart and featured notable
radio hits like the Active Rock top 20 "Change" plus three Mainstream
Rock top 10 smashes "Cover Me", "You" and "Far
Behind", the latter of which crossed over into The Billboard Hot
100 at #18 and also grabbed a #7 spot on The Modern Rock Tracks. The quartet
spent the next two years touring extensively throughout the U.S. and in
1995 their debut album was certified 3 x platinum for sales of over three
million copies.
That same year, Candlebox's second effort was released, but "Lucy"
failed to replicate its predecessor's success, the record stalled at #11
in The Billboard 200 chart. Its main single, "Simple Lessons",
peaked at #5 on The Mainstream Rock list and at #12 on The Modern Rock
Tracks; "Understanding" was another Active Rock top 20 hit for
the band.
In 1997, Mercado left the band, he was replaced by former Pearl
Jam drummer, Dave Krusen. One year later Candlebox released a new
single, "It's Alright", in advance of their third album, "Happy
Pills"; the single quickly catapulted into the top 3 of The Mainstream
Rock chart and achieved a career-best peak of #2 that chart, but "Happy
Pills" didn't rise higher than #65 on The Billboard Top 200 Albums
chart. The follow-up single, "10,000 Horses", peaked at #13
at Active Rock radio and the title-track reached the #17 spot on the same
chart.
Evidently Candlebox broke up sometime around 1999 but came back together
again in 2006 when Kevin Martin and Peter Klett, the songwriting team
that formed the band, were reunited with Bardi Martin and original drummer
Scott Mercado to release "The Best Of Candlebox". Bardi Martin,
who earned a law degree, left the group the following year and was replaced
Adam Kury on bass.
In July 2008 Candlebox unleashed its first album of original material
in ten years; "Into The Sun" peaked at #32 on The Billboard
200 while the lead single hit #15 on The Hot Mainstream Rock chart.
