This Seattle, Washington USA-based act was formed in December 1991 by
vocalist Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin and
drummer Scott Mercado.
The Alternative-Rock quartet, which was less influenced by the grungy
sound, debuted with 1993's self-titled album, the record became a surprise
success, reaching #7 on The Billboard Top 200 chart; three singles, "Cover
Me", "Far Behind" and "You", ranked in the top
10 of The Mainstream Rock chart; the band spent the next two years touring
extensively and in 1995 their debut album was certified 3 x platinum for
sales of over three million copies; that same year Candlebox's second
effort was released, but "Lucy" failed to replicate its predecessor's
success, the record entered the top 20 of The Top 200 chart and its single
"Simple Lessons" peaked at #5 on The Mainstream Rock Tracks
list, "Understanding" also ranked in the top 20 in the same
chart.
In 1997, Scott left the band, he was replaced by former Pearl
Jam drummer, Dave Krusen; Candlebox along with the newcomer released
one year later a new single, "It's Alright", in advance of the
laboured "Happy Pills", the single became their greatest success
in Mainstream Rock chart reaching the #3 spot, the title-track and "10,000
Horses" climbed into the top 20 in the same chart, but their third
album didn't rise higher than #65 in U.S. Top 200 chart.
