Charlyn Marie Marshall was born in Atlanta, Georgia USA in 1972; in her youth she shuffled all around Georgia and Alabama and began playing the local Rock scene. In 1992 Chan Marshall moved to the East Village in New York City, where she and her friend Glen Thrasher gigged around with an ever-evolving line-up.

In 1995 Marshall, under the name Cat Power, released her first full-length album, "Dear Sir"; "Myra Lee" followed a year later, these albums showcased her strong abilities as a songwriter as well as a distinctive blend of Blues, Folk, Rock and Country.
Shortly after the second album's release, Cat Power signed with Matador Records who released "What Would The Community Think" in September 1996.
Two years later the artist's fourth full-length disc, "Moon Pix", was released; it furthered her reputation as an indie-Folk visionary.
After this 1998's critical acclaimed album, Marshall put together a cover album of songs originally by Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, Moby Grape and others, "The Covers Record" made a ripple on the Billboard Magazine's Top Heatseekers list reaching the #44 position.
After half a decade without any new material, her sixth LP, "You Are Free", arrived eagerly anticipated and largely meets expectations, it rose to the top of the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart after its February 2003 release and also made a brief appearance on The Billboard 200 Sales chart; the first single off the CD, "He War", has received good airplay on several FM stations, all over the globe.

Cat Power resurfaced in January 2006 with a new album titled "The Greatest" which features the single "Living Proof".
