The British Pop-Rock quartet Coldplay was formed at the University College
of London, ENGLAND, in 1997 by vocalist + pianist Chris Martin, guitarist
Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion.
The next year they released their first 4-track demo EP entitled "Safety"
and followed it up with the single "Brothers And Sisters", which
broke into the U.K. Top 100 in early 1999. By the summer of that same
year, Coldplay signed a contract with Parlophone Records and issued the
"Blue Room" EP; the band spent the rest of 1999 touring their
homeland in support of their major label debut 5-song disc.
When the tour was completed they went into the studio to record the band's
first full-length album, "Parachutes", which was released in
July 2000; preceded by the breakthrough single "Yellow", the
track peaked at #4 on the Official U.K. chart, the album catapulted to
#1 on the U.K. Pop chart and extended Coldplay's popularity worlwide in
a few months. "Shiver" opened at #26 on The Modern Rock Tracks,
"Yellow" stormed the American singles charts peaking at #6 on
The Modern Rock list and reaching the #48 position on The Billboard Hot
100; with their sweet melodic single "Trouble", received additional
success in U.K. where it leapt to #10 and also in U.S. where it climbed
into the top 30 of The Modern Rock chart. In America, "Parachutes"
peaked at #19 on the Top Canadian Albums chart and reached the #51 slot
on The Billboard 200 winning a Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music
Album in 2001.
Coldplay's second album, "A Rush Of Blood To The Head", came
out in August of 2002 debutig at #1 in Britain, Canada and Australia,
the record cracked the top 5 of The Billboard Top 200 chart and achieved
multi-platinum status in many countries around the world; it generated
three Modern Rock top 20 hits: "In My Place", "Clocks"
and "The Scientist" plus the minor hit "God Put A Smile
Upon Your Face". At the 45th Annual Grammy Awards the group picked
up Best Alternative Music Album, "In My Place" won for Best
Rock Performance. "Clocks" was honored as Record Of The Year
in early 2004.
The group's long-awaited third album, "X&Y", was released
in early June 2005, it shot to #1 all over the world, including the U.S.
where it sold over 700,000 copies in its first week, making the disc the
second biggest selling first week sale in the country; by the end of the
year, Coldplay had sold over 8 million albums worldwide. The first single
off the CD, "Speed Of Sound", was another monster hit for the
band as it went to #2 in U.K. and Canada, to #5 on the U.S. alt-Rock airplay
chart and to #8 on The Billboard Hot 100; the follow-up single, "Fix
You", hit the top 5 in U.K. and reached #18 on The Modern Rock list
while "Talk" peaked at #5 on the same chart.
Coldplay released their next album, "Viva La Vida Or Death And All
His Friends", in June 2008. The disc peaked at #1 in almost every
country it charted and earned the band its fifth Grammy trophy for Best
Rock Album. The first single, "Violet Hill", quickly broke into
the top 10 in England, Australia, Canada and on the U.S. Hot Modern Rock
airplay chart. The follow-up single, "Viva La Vida", did better
with a peak of #1 on The Billboard Hot 100, on The Hot Modern Rock Tracks
and on the U.K. Top 100; in addition, it netted a Grammy Award for Best
Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group. The album contained two more U.S. Alternative
Rock radio singles: the top 10 hit "Lost" and "Life In
Technicolor II", which stalled just outside the top 20.
The English quartet's long awaited new single "Every Teardrop Is
A Waterfall" is out now with fans already giving it rave reviews.
The track is the first single to be released from their forthcoming fifth
studio album, slated for release in 2011.
