Hall & Oates is one of the longest running Pop-Rock duo in music
history, they dominated the Billboard charts with an impressive string
of hit singles during the last three decades. Flipping the calendars back
to 1967, students at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA,
the two men teamed-up to sing in various local bands.
After several live shows, in 1972, the duo signed a contract with Atlantic
Records who released their debut album, "Whole Oats", in November
that year.
Their next release, 1973's "Abandoned Luncheonette", included
their first charting single, "She's Gone"; the following year
Hall & Oates has relocated to Greenwich Village, New York City, where
recorded "War Babies" with Todd Rundgren producing, the new
album reached the #86 in U.S. Pop chart.
In September of 1975 the duo signed a new deal with RCA and released their
eponymous effort also known as silver album, it broke into the top 20
of the official U.S. Pop chart and generated their breakthrough single
"Sara Smile", written by Hall for his girlfriend Sara Allen,
the track peaked at #4 in U.S. Pop Singles chart becoming a million seller.
1976's "Bigger Than Both Of Us" climbed the U.S. Albums chart
to the #13 spot becoming Hall & Oates' first platinum LP, its first
single, "Do What You Want, Be What You Are", entered the top
40 of the Pop chart, it was followed by the #1 "Rich Girl" and
one more top 40 hit: "Back Together Again".
The duo sixth album of new material, "Beauty On A Back Street",
appeared in October 1977 but failed to match the success of its predecessor;
it was followed one year later by "Livetime" and the new studio
effort, "Along The Red Ledge", which featured the U.S. top 20
hit "It's A Laugh" plus the #42 "I Don't Wanna Lose You".
By the fall of 1979, Hall & Oates issued "X-Static", the
record climbed nearly to the top 30 of the U.S. Albums chart and yielded
the delicate "Wait For Me" which peaked at #18 on The Pop Singles
chart.
After Daryl Hall released his debut solo album, "Sacred Songs",
the duo came back together in September 1980 self-producing "Voices",
it enjoyed a 100-week chart run in the U.S. Pop Albums list reaching the
#17 and spawning no less then four American Pop charting singles including
the #1 "Kiss On My List", the top 5 hit "You Make My Dreams",
the #12 "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and the top 30 "How
Does It Feel To Be Back"; the album, which sold over one million
copies, also included "Everytime You Go Away", which will be
covered by Paul Young and become #1 in the States and U.K. in 1985.
The follow-up to "Voices" was released exactly one year later,
"Private Eyes" reached the #5 in U.S. Top 200 LPs & Tapes
chart; the title-song shot to #1 on the Pop Singles chart and also entered
for the first time the Mainstream Rock list; followed the masterpiece,
"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", this single topped the Pop
chart, the Dance chart and the Black Singles, an extremely rare feat for
a white-act, it also entered the top 30 of The Mainstream Rock chart Stateside
and became their best U.K. Singles chart success to date hitting #8 spot;
the third single, "Did It In A Minute", peaked at #9 in U.S.
Pop chart and finally, "Your Imagination", reached the #33 in
the same chart.
The 11th duo studio effort, aptly-titled "H2O", arrived in late
1982, the record sold over two million copies and became their best chart-placing
in U.S. where peaked at #3 highlighted by magnificent singles such as
"Maneater", #1 on Pop chart, #18 on Mainstream Rock chart and
#6 in the U.K. Official chart, the soul-ballad "One On One"
peaked at #7 in U.S. Pop chart and the cover-track "Family Man"
hit #6, it was followed, in November 1983, by a new single, "Say
It Isn't So" which peaked at #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 and climbed
into the top 20 of The Mainstream Rock chart; the track was collected
in the greatest hits set, "Rock 'N Soul Part 1", which went
on to sell a million copies reaching the #7 on The Billboard Top 200 chart,
it included another previously unreleased track, "Adult Education",
which hit #8 on The Billboard Hot 100.
Less than one year later, their next LP, the dance-oriented "Big
Bam Boom", reached the #6 in U.S. Top 200 chart becoming their fifth
consecutive platinum album, it generated four American Top 40 hits including
the #1 "Out Of Touch", the #5 "Method Of Modern Love",
"Possession Obsession" and "Some Things Are Better Left
Unsaid"; over the course of 1985 Daryl Hall & John Oates take
part in the all-star recording session in Los Angeles for the USA For
Africa single, "We Are The World"; recorded a live benefit,
"Live At The Apollo", with ex-Temptations David Ruffin and Eddie
Kendricks, the set reached the #23 on The Billboard 200 chart spawning
a single, "The Way You Do The Things You Do", which peaked at
#20 on The Billboard Hot 100 and in December the two joined Artists United
Against Apartheid, another benefit project which yielded the top 40 hit
"Sun City".
The following year Daryl Hall released his sophomore album, "Three
Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine".
The duo regrouped switching record labels and releasing in the summer
of 1988 "Ooh Yeah!", the record reached the #24 on The Billboard
200 Albums list, spawning the Hot 100 top 3 hit "Everything Your
Heart Desires" plus the #29 "Missed Opportunity" and the
minor hit "Downtown Life".
Two years later "Change Of Season" was a commercial disappointment
but generated the single "So Close" which peaked at #11 on The
Billboard Hot 100.
After spending several years on hiatus Daryl Hall & John Oates came
back together to record "Marigold Sky"; another five years passed
before the duo returned with new material: the single "Do It For
Love" topped the Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart and appeared
on "VH1 Behind The Music: The Daryl Hall & John Oates Collection".
In February 2003 the pair issued a new album entitled "Do It For
Love".
October 2004 saw Hall & Oates released, "Our Kind Of Soul",
which collected many R&B Soul remakes including the Adult Contemporary
top 10 hit single "I'll Be Around".
