Alternative-Rock vocalist+guitarist born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg
SOUTH AFRICA, Matthews with his family moved to Charlottesville in Virginia,
where he put together his first band in the early '90s touring the college
circuit.
In 1993 Dave Matthews Band self-released its debut album, "Remember
Two Things", despite it never charting in the official U.S. list,
was later certified gold.
The next year the band signed a recording contract with RCA, releasing
in April their major-label debut, "Under The Table And Dreaming";
by the time its single "What Would You Say" climbed The Modern
Rock chart reaching the #11, the album reached the same spot on The Billboard
Top 200 chart, spawning two more Modern Rock top 20 hit singles: "Ants
Marching" and "Satellite"; the group hit the road for their
first official national tour and travelled to Europe for several gigs,
by the fall of 1995 the band's second album was certified 4 x platinum.
In the spring of 1996 the group returned with a new LP, "Crash",
which shot to #2 in U.S. Albums chart and went platinum, the record included
"Too Much" and "Crash Into Me", both the singles climbed
The Modern Rock chart peaking respectively at #5 and #7 spots; with the
Modern Rock top 20 hit single, "So Much To Say" the group took
home a Grammy for Best Rock Performance; also the final single, "Tripping
Billies", made top 20 in the same chart.
After the strong commercial performance of "Live At Red Rocks 8.15.95",
#3 on The Billboard 200 with a tally of over one million copies sold,
in 1998 the group issued the fourth studio-effort, "Before These
Crowded Streets", it reached the #1 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums
list and generated "Don't Drink The Water" which rose to #4
on The Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Stay (Wasting Time)" peaked
at #11 in the same chart and "Crush" received good airplay on
adult-contemporary radio stations.
Two double-CD live sets followed: the double-platinum "Listener Supported"
and "Live At Luther College" which peaked at #2 in U.S. Top
200 chart.
Dave Matthews Band's next studio-album, the first in three years, was
released in February 2001, "Everyday" hit #1 on both U.S. and
Canadian Official Albums charts; the record contained "I Did It",
which reached the #5 slot on The Modern Rock Tracks list, plus "The
Space Between", their first top 30 hit on The Billboard Hot 100,
the track also peaked at #10 on Modern Rock chart. The group spent the
summer touring the country and "Everyday" was finally certified
3 x platinum.
Before the year's end two more live albums were released, "Live In
Chicago, 12.19.98" peaked at #6 on The Billboard 200 chart.
The band regrouped in January of 2002, revisited tracks they had previously
written and worked on some new material for a stop-gap CD "Busted
Stuff" which was issued in July; included on the album are road-tested
fan favorites such as "Grey Street" and "Where Are You
Going".
One year later, Dave Matthews, returned with his first solo album, which
debuted at #2 on The Billboard Top 200 chart, the first single off of
"Some Devil", entitled "Gravedigger", reached the
#35 on Modern Rock chart and earned Matthews a Grammy Award for Best Male
Rock Vocal Performance; the album also included the minor hit "Save
Me".
In early May 2005 Dave Matthews, reunited with his band, released "Stand
Up", their new album features the single "American Baby".
