Fusing together Rock, Folk, Pop and Jazz, Dave Matthews Band formed in
Charlottesville, Virginia USA, in early 1991, when vocalist + guitarist
Dave Matthews, who was born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg, SOUTH
AFRICA, decided to put some songs he had written on tape.
Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he opted to bring
in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. Matthews
found assistance in saxophonist LeRoi Moore, 16-year-old bassist Stefan
Lessard and drummer Carter Beauford; completing the band was keyboard
player Peter Griesar, who left the band after a couple of years, as well
as the talented and classically trained violinist, Boyd Tinsley. The group
toured constantly on the college circuit, building a reputation as a great
live act and the fan base grew at an incredible rate.
In November 1993, Dave Matthews Band released its first album, "Remember
Two Things", on its Bama Rags label. Though the disc never made much
of an impact on the official charts went on to be certified gold by the
RIAA, a significant accomplishment for an independent album.
During the first part of 1994, Dave Matthews Band recorded its RCA debut,
"Under The Table And Dreaming". Just before the album's release,
in September 1994, the group hit the road for their first official national
tour that lasted well over a year and included sold out theater dates
across the country as well as a trip to Europe. Their major-label debut
included the single "What Would You Say" which entered The Modern
Rock chart at #11, the album reached the same spot on The Billboard Top
200, spawning two more Modern Rock top 20 hit singles: "Ants Marching"
and "Satellite". By the fall of 1995 the band's second album
was certified 4 x platinum.
"Crash", Dave Matthews Band's second RCA studio album, was
released in April 1996 and debuted at #2 on The Billboard 200 chart. The
record included "Too Much" and "Crash Into Me", both
the singles climbed The Modern Rock chart peaking at #5 and #7 spots,
respectively; with the Modern Rock top 20 hit single, "So Much To
Say" the group took home a Grammy for Best Rock Performance. Also
the final single, "Tripping Billies", made top 20 on The Modern
Rock chart.
After the strong commercial performance of "Live At Red Rocks 8.15.95",
#3 on The Billboard 200 with a tally of over one million copies sold,
in 1998 the group issued the fourth studio-effort, "Before These
Crowded Streets"; it was the band's strongest debut to date: #1 on
The Billboard's Top 200 Albums list generating three Modern Rock smashes
including the top 5 hit "Don't Drink The Water", the top 10
"Stay (Wasting Time)" and "Crush" which fell just
shy of the top 10.
Two double-CD live sets followed: the double-platinum "Listener Supported"
and "Live At Luther College" which peaked at #2 on The Billboard
200 chart.
Dave Matthews Band's next studio-album, the first in three years, was
released in February 2001, "Everyday" hit #1 on both U.S. and
Canadian Official Albums charts; the record contained "I Did It",
which peaked at #5 on The Modern Rock Tracks, plus "The Space Between",
their first top 30 hit on The Billboard Hot 100, the track also peaked
at #10 on The Modern Rock chart; the title-track was another alt-Rock
radio top 40 hit for the band. The group spent the summer touring the
country and "Everyday" was finally certified 3 x platinum.
Before the year's end two more live albums were released; "Live In
Chicago, 12.19.98" peaked at #6 on The Billboard 200 chart.
The band regrouped in January of 2002, revisited tracks they had previously
written and worked on some new material for a stop-gap CD, "Busted
Stuff", which was issued in July; included on the album are road-tested
fan favorites such as the American top 40 smash "Where Are You Going"
and the alt-Rock radio top 40 hit "Grey Street".
One year later, Dave Matthews, returned with his first solo album, which
debuted at #2 on The Billboard Top 200 chart; the first single off of
"Some Devil", entitled "Gravedigger", reached the
#35 position on The Modern Rock chart and earned Matthews a Grammy Award
for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance; the album also included the minor
hit "Save Me".
Spring of 2004 found Dave Matthews Band at home in their Virginia studio
rehearsing for the summer tour and beginning to mold some new tunes for
their forthcoming studio album.
In early May 2005 the group released "Stand Up", the first album
of new material since "Everyday"; the main single "American
Baby" quickly bulleted into The Billboard Hot 100 at #16 their best
chart-placing to date, while the album easily jumped to the #1 spot on
The Billboard 200 list.
In August of 2008, Dave Matthews Band suffered the devastating loss of
founding band member, LeRoi Moore, who passed away on August 19, 2008
from complications stemming from a June all-terrain vehicle accident.
Dave Matthews Band's highly anticipated first studio album in four years,
"Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King", is set to hit stores on
June 2, 2009. The disc features the single "Funny The Way It Is".
