Donald Fagen was born on January 10, 1948, in Passaic, New Jersey USA
and he is generally regarded as one of the finest Jazz-Rock singer+keyboardist
& composer. Fagen learned to play piano in his youth and put together
his first Jazz ensemble while still in high school; in 1967 he met Walter
Becker at New York's Bard College, the pair soon began playing their
own brand of music and after relocating to Los Angeles, in the early '70s,
they formed Steely Dan scoring an unexpected top 10 chart hit with the
magnificent "Do It Again". Though the band didn't perform live
after 1974, Steely Dan's popularity continued to grow throughout the decade,
as their albums became critical favorites and their singles became staples
of Pop-Rock radio stations. After 1980's "Gaucho" album, Fagen
and Becker parted company, nonetheless, they helped each other with various
individual projects in ensuing years.
Once again living in New York, Donald Fagen then launched his solo career
releasing "The Nightfly" in October 1982, it peaked at #11 on
the U.S. Top 200 LPs & Tapes chart and its main single, "I.G.Y.",
reached the #26 spot on the Pop Sales chart and #17 on the Billboard's
Mainstream Rock list; "New Frontier" followed, reaching the
#70 position on the Pop Singles chart.
He spent the rest of the decade out of the spotlight, during which time
he penned little more than a handful of songs for film soundtracks including
"Century's End", recorded for the movie "Bright Lights,
Big City" with Michael J. Fox, released in 1988, this single reached
#83 on The Billboard Hot 100 and hit #12 on The Mainstream Rock Tracks
chart.
In 1993 Fagen recorded his second second solo album, "Kamakiriad",
with Walter Becker producing, the
record climbed into the top 10 of The Billboard 200 list upon its May
release and the lead single, "Tomorrow's Girls", hit the top
20 of The Mainstream Rock chart.
The success of the album and the revue convinced the two to renew their
partnership and in addition to performing concerts, Fagen and Becker finally
rleased 2000's "Two Against Nature", a collection of new Steely
Dan material which garnered them three Grammy Awards.
March 2006 saw Donald Fagen issue a new solo album on Reprise Records;
featuring nine new songs written by Fagen, "Morph The Cat" is
his first solo effort in thirteen years, the set includes the single "H
Gang".
