This all-female Alternative-Rock group from Palo Alto, California USA
was formed in the early '90s by vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Allison
Robertson, bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano.
They started out as a cover-band performing live under the moniker of
Ragady Anne around the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1995 they became The
Donnas, with the help of Darrin Raffaelli, who had written some songs
which they recorded for his label, Super*Teem Records; they put out a
full-length and three 7-inches on Super*Teem, all of which are now out
of print.
After their first tour of Japan, they signed for Lookout Records who released
"American Teenage Rock 'N' Roll Machine" in January of 1998
and a few months later, the label reissued the band's self-titled debut
LP.
The next year, the group returned with the Hard-Rock oriented "Get
Skintight", an album completely written by The Donnas, except for
their Mötley Crüe cover "Too
Fast for Love".
Its follow-up, "Turn 21", which arrived in early 2001, climbed
into the top 20 of The American Top Independent Albums chart and before
the year's end the band inked a new deal with Atlantic Records.
"Spend The Night" was issued by Atlantic in October 2002 and
became the band's first record to break into The Billboard Top 200 chart
reaching the #62 position while the lead single, "Take It Off",
peaked at #17 on The Modern Rock chart.
The band returned in October 2004 with its sixth album, "Gold Medal";
the CD reached #76 on The Billboard 200, it included the single "Fall
Behind Me" which barely cracked the top 30 of The Modern Rock chart.
The Donnas get back to business with their new Hard-Rock full-length
disc "Bitchin'". The album was self-released on the band's new
label, Purple Feather Records, in September 2007; "Don't Wait Up
For Me" is the first single taken off the CD.
