The musician, composer, actor Duncan Sheik was born on November 18, 1969,
in Montclair, New Jersey USA, but grew up in South Carolina, where he
initially studied piano. Sheik later moved to guitar and while attending
Brown University played in a band with fellow singer+songwriter Lisa
Loeb.
He set off on his own and eventually was signed to Atlantic Records,
who released his eponymous debut album in June 1996; the record soared
to the top of the Billboard's Heatseekers chart and reached the #83 on
The Billboard 200 Sales list helped by the smash hit "Barely Breathing",
the single eventually enjoyed a year-long chart run in The Billboard Hot
100 peaking at #16; the follow-up single, "She Runs Away", received
moderate airplay on Adult Top 40 stations.
Two years later, Sheik delivered his second LP, "Humming", an
album full of philosophical shifts and orchestral-oriented structures
which failed to become as successful as its predecessor reaching the #163
slot on The Billboard 200 chart.
"Phantom Moon", written in collaboration with New York playwright
Steven Sater, followed in February 2001.
His fourth effort, "Daylight", appeared in August of the following
year, this album reached the #110 on The Billboard 200 list and produced
a mid-size Adult Top 40 hit in "On A High".
In January 2006 Duncan Sheik released a new album, "White Limousine",
on Zoë/Rounder, with the title-track serving as the first single.
