Eddie Vedder, original name Edward Louis Severson III, was born on December
23, 1964 in Evanston, Illinois USA. It's no suprise that Vedder has so
much maturity and realness about him. His life as an adult began at a
young age, his parents divorced in 1967 and his mother would remarry,
not telling her son of the divorce until much later in his life. He would
use his stepfather's surname and go by Eddie Mueller until he found out
the truth and adopted his mother's last name, Vedder. After turbulent
years at home, Eddie Vedder moved out on his own. He lived in San Diego
for a while, before moving to Chicago to be with his mother and brothers.
Eventually, though, he moved back to San Diego; by this time, Vedder had
his GED and began working at various jobs. In his spare time, he would
record demos on a small machine in his room.
In 1990 he joined both ex-Mother
Love Bone Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament in Seattle's tribute to Andrew
Wood, Temple Of The Dog, alongside
Chris Cornell of Soundgarden,
who instigated the project, Soundgarden
drummer Matt Cameron, plus Gossard's school friend Mike McCready. Both
Vedder and McCready subsequently linked up with Ament and Gossard to become
Pearl Jam, with the addition of drummer
Dave Krusen; the band had also dabbled with the name Mookie Blaylock.
Part of the '90s Seattle Grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana
and Soundgarden, Pearl
Jam debuted with "Ten" in 1991; Eddie Vedder became a legendary
vocalist, as his brooding voice pours out emotion and hooks galore.
As solo artist, he has contributed music to the soundtrack for the film
"Dead Man Walking" and also recorded a cover of the Beatles'
"You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" for 2002's Sean Penn-starring
"I Am Sam"; this track peaked at #30 on The Modern Rock chart.
Vedder and Penn have been friends for more than a decade; Eddie Vedder
is close to finishing some new music for the upcoming Penn-directed film
"Into The Wild"; the movie is a film adaptation of Jon Krakauer's
best-selling book "Into The Wild". The film opens on September
21 and the soundtrack album will be in stores September 18. The set includes
the single "Hard Sun".
