This Alternative Pop-Rock quintet began performing as Soft in Manchester,
ENGLAND. The band came together in the early '90s with vocalist Guy Garvey,
guitarist Mark Potter, keyboard player Craig Potter, bassist Pete Turner
and drummer Richard Jupp.
In 1997 the five-piece outfit re-named themselves Elbow crafting a more
modern-Rock sound, recorded two independent EPs and eventually signed
with V2 Records in late 2000.
Elbow issued its debut full-length album, "Asleep In The Back",
in May 2001; the CD climbed into U.K. top 20 and included their first
British charting single, "Red", plus the title-track which cracked
the top 20 of the U.K. National Singles chart.
The group returned two years later with their second effort, "Cast
Of Thousands"; it peaked at #7 on the U.K. Albums chart and scraped
the bottom of The Billboard Top 200 Stateside; the record generated "Fallen
Angel", which crawled up to #16 on the U.K. Singles chart and the
minor hit "Not A Job".
September 2005 saw the release of "Leaders Of The Free World",
the disc was another British top 20 charting album for the band and its
main single, "Forget Myself", fell just outside the U.K. top
20.
The Mancunian quintet left V2 to sign with Fiction Records for which
they recorded their fourth studio album, "The Seldom Seen Kid",
their most successful effort to date. It peaked at #5 in U.K. and reached
the #109 position on the American Billboard Top 200 chart upon its March
2008 release; in addition, the CD charted two British top 40 hits: "Grounds
For Divorce" and "One Day Like This".
Elbow resurfaced three years later with "Build A Rocket Boys!";
the album debuted at #2 in U.K. and made a mid-chart appearance in the
States producing an Alternative radio minor hit with "Open Arms".
