Eithne Ní Bhraonáin was born on May 17th, 1961, in Dore Bartley, a small village in the region Gaoth Dobhair, Donegal County IRELAND; the sixth in a family of nine she, learned to play keyboard at age six and in the late '70s she joined Clannad with her brothers and sisters; in 1982, when the band took a Pop direction, Eithne left Clannad to pursue her own solo musical journey.

She was first credited as Enya Ní Bhraonáin two years later when she contributed some music to the movie The Frog Prince.
In 1986, Enya, composed and performed several pieces commissioned for the BBC-TV documentary series "The Celts", which was only shown a year later and which culminated with the release of Enya's debut full-length disc, simply named "Enya" and with "The Celts" series soundtrack songs among the tracks; the album didn't receive much attention or critical praise, however it was remastered and reissued in 1992 as "The Celts".
In late 1987, the singer+songwriter signed with Warner Music who released her breakthrough album, "Watermark" in September 1988; it featured the smash hit "Orinoco Flow" which climbed to the top of the U.K. Pop Singles chart and reached the #24 on the American Billboard Hot 100, the track also hit #6 on The Modern Rock chart sending the album into the top 30 of The Billboard 200 list.
Enya re-emerged three years later with "Shepherd Moons", this album was another worldwide smash thanks to the magnificent hit single "Caribbean Blue", it peaked at #13 in Britain and soared to the #3 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart; her third album debuted at #17 on The Billboard Top 200, won a Grammy for Best New Age Album and went on to sell over 10 million copies across the globe spawning a second U.K. top 10 hit in "Book Of Days".
Another four years passed before the Irish singer returned with her fourth album; "The Memory Of Trees" shot to #9 on The Billboard Top 200 chart upon its November 1995 release and won her a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album; the record generated the U.K. top 10 hit single, "Anywhere Is".
In November 1997 the New Age vocalist delivered a delicious compilation with "Paint The Sky With Stars The Best Of Enya", the set, which featured two new compositions, entered the U.S. Top 200 Albums chart at #30 and the previously unreleased track "Only If..." scraped the lower reaches of the The Billboard Hot 100 and it didn't come close to cracking the U.K. top 40 Singles chart.
Three years later, November 2000, she released her first album of new material in five years, "A Day Without Rain"; it was a sizable success in North America falling just one position short of #1 on The Billboard 200 and peaked at #4 on the Top Canadian Albums charts while the lead single, "Only Time", achieved a career-best peak of #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, as well as #1 slot on Adult Contemporary airplay chart, primarily because it captured the mood of the nation following the September 11th terrorist attack. Enya's Grammy collection increased in size in February 2002, at 44th annual Grammy Awards as she took home her well-deserved Best New Age Album honors.

November 2005, saw the release of Enya's sixth studio album, "Amarantine".
