This Alternative-Rock quartet was formed at the end of 1994 in Seattle,
Washington USA, after the death of Kurt Cobain; Nirvana
drummer Dave Grohl switched to vocals+guitar and after early rumors that
Krist Novoselic would also be a member of the group, ultimately proved
to be false, Grohl recruited guitarist Pat Smear and enlisted Sunny
Day Real Estate's rhythm section: bassist Nate Mendel and drummer
William Goldsmith to fill out the line-up.
Their debut single, "This Is A Call", was issued in June of
1995, it peaked at #2 on Modern Rock Tracks chart and a few weeks later
was followed by the band's self-titled debut album, the record reached
#23 in the U.S. Top 200 Albums chart and by the time went platinum; the
next two singles, "I'll Stick Around" and "Big Me",
climbed to the #8 and #3 spots, respectively, on the Billboard's Modern
Rock chart.
Goldsmith left the band during the recording of the Foo's second album
and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins; "The Colour And The Shape",
which arrived in May of 1997, debuted at #10 on The Billboard Top 200
Albums list and spawned four smash singles, the Mainstream and Modern
Rock top 10 hits "Monkey Wrench", "Everlong" and "My
Hero" plus "Walking After You" which reached the #12 position
on The Modern Rock chart.
Following the album's release, Smear quit and was later replaced for a
brief period by Franz Stahl. Chris Shiflett was finally chosen as the
permanent guitarist.
1999's "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" peaked at #10 in the
U.S. Top Albums chart and won a Grammy for Best Rock Album; the first
single, "Learn To Fly", hit #1 and #2 spots on Modern and Mainstream
Rock charts, respectively and became their first Billboard's Hot 100 entry
at #13. It was followed by the Active Rock top 10 hit "Stacked Actors",
the Modern Rock top 10 hit "Breakout" and the final single,
"Next Year", hit top 20 on the same chart.
In October of 2002, Foo Fighters, returned with their fourth album, "One
By One", it reached the #3 slot on the North-American charts and
included the explosive #1 Billboard Modern Rock single "All My Life"
which was honored in the Best Hard Rock Performance category at 45th Annual
Grammy Awards; three more singles from the record cracked the top 20 of
The Modern Rock chart including the #5 "Times Like These", "Darling
Nikki" and "Low".
In late 2003 Dave Grohl started a side-project named Probot,
a collection of Heavy-Metal superstars performance.
Foo Fighters resurfaced in June 2005 with the double-album, "In Your
Honor"; guests include Led Zeppelin
bassist John Paul Jones. The two-CD set went to #2 on The Billboard 200
list in no time while the first single, "Best Of You", shot
to #1 on both Modern and Mainstream Rock charts and also reached #18 on
The Billboard Hot 100; the second single, "DOA", peaked at #1
on The Modern Rock chart and "No Way Back" became the album's
third Modern Rock top 3 hit falling just one position short of #1.
They performed several acoustic concerts on "In Your Honor"
supporting tour; one of these, a stop at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles,
is documented on the 2006 live album "Skin And Bones", which
culls 15 highlights from the show including an unreleased track called
"Skin And Bones".
September 2007 saw the release Foo Fighters' sixth studio record, "Echoes,
Silence, Patience & Grace"; the first single off the new CD,
"The Pretender", shot to #1 on both Hot Mainstream Rock and
Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts.
