After producing Nirvana's "Nevermind"
and some other Alternative-Rock superstar outfits such as The
Smashing Pumpkins and L7, Butch Vig assembled
Garbage in 1993 with help of guitarist Duke Erikson and bass player Steve
Marker; the trio based in Madison, Wisconsin USA, has been crafting their
sound for just over two years; Vig took over the role of drummer and recruited
Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson to complete the line-up.
In August 1995 the quartet released their eponymous debut album which
was preceded by the Modern Rock top 30 hit "Vow"; the second
single, "Queer", reached the #12 slot in the same chart and
sent the album to #20 on The Billboard Top 200 chart; one year later the
record went platinum while "Stupid Girl" hit #2 on Modern Rock
chart and peaked at #24 on The Billboard Hot 100, the fourth single, "Only
Happy When It Rains", reached the #16 on Modern Rock Tracks list.
Before the year's end, "#1 Crush", taken from the 1995's 3-song
CD "Subhuman", was chosen for the soundtrack of the Baz Luhrmann's
film "Romeo + Juliet ", the track rose to #1 on Modern Rock
chart.
The quartet issued their second effort, "Version 2.0", in May
of 1998, it reached the #13 on The Billboard Top 200, peaked at #2 in
Canada and shot to #1 on the Official U.K. charts; in the U.S. the album
spawned no less than four Modern Rock hit singles, including the #5 "Push
It", the #6 "I Think I'm Paranoid", the #11 "Special"
and the top 30 "When I Grow Up".
The following year, Garbage contributed the main song to the James Bond
movie "The World Is Not Enough".
The group charted again at #13 in U.S. Top 200 with their third full-length
disc, "Beautifulgarbage", which arrived in October 2001, it
peaked at #6 on both Canadian and British Albums charts; the first single
off of the CD, "Androgyny" was a moderate hit reaching the #19
on the Canadian chart and #24 in Britain where a second single cut, "Shut
Your Mouth " climbed into the top 20; two more singles, "Cherry
Lips (Go Baby Go!)" and "Breaking Up The Girl", stormed
the Australian chart peaking respectively at #7 and at #19.
Garbage returned to the spotlight in spring 2005 with its new album,
the 11-track "Bleed Like Me", it includes the lead single "Why
Do You Love Me".
