Grunge Alternative-Rock band formed in Los Angeles, California USA, in
1989 by Courtney Love, an ex-stripper
and actress who started singing and playing guitar with L7's
Jennifer Finch and Kat Bjelland, Love appeared for a while as vocalist
with Faith No More; she recruited
guitarist Eric Erlandson, bass player Jill Emery and drummer Caroline
Rue, forming her new band: Hole.
In 1991 the band recorded its debut album, "Pretty On The Inside",
the next year, in March, Love married Nirvana
singer+guitarist Kurt Cobain, that same month Emery departed from the
group, with Rue following shortly afterwards.
Through 1993, Love, re-assembled the band by bringing on board bassist
Kristen M. Pfaff and drummer Patty Schemel, Hole's second full-length
disc was finished in April of 1994; four days before "Live Through
This" was released, Kurt Cobain was found in his house, dead of a
gunshot wound.
Two months later, Kristen Pfaff died of a heroin overdose, she was replaced
by Melissa Auf Der Maur; the group's
second album eventually reached the #52 in U.S. Top 200 chart and generated
two Modern Rock top 20 hits including the #4 "Doll Parts" and
"Miss World".
In 1997, Hole, returned to the studio to cut their long awaited third
LP; "Celebrity Skin" was released in August 1998 and broke into
the top 10 of The Billboard Top 200 chart; the title-track peaked at #1
on Modern Rock chart, followed "Malibu" and "Awful"
both the tracks entered the same chart peaking respectively at #3 and
#13.
Around this time Schemel quit, Samantha Maloney was chosen as her replacement
and took over the drum stool.
Auf Der Maur left the band the following
year to join The Smashing Pumpkins;
at this point the future of the group became even more uncertain, in fact
Courtney Love announced the end of
Hole in May of 2002.
She returned in February of 2004 with her solo-debut album "America's
Sweetheart".
