The Alternative-Rock band Idlewild was formed in December 1995 in Edinburgh,
SCOTLAND by singer Roddy Woomble, guitarist Rod Jones, bassist Phil Scanlon
and drummer Colin Newton; the foursome soon began to perform on a regular
basis around the region and taped a demo which landed them a contract
with the Human Condition Recods label.
In February 1997 Scanlon decided to leave the band to concentrate on
his studies, Bob Fairfoull replaced him on bass; that summer the band
was asked to record a single for Fierce Panda label and a few months later
the 6-track set "Captain" followed as the group's debut mini-album.
Idlewild spent most of 1998 on tour in the U.K. and eventually completed
their debut full-length disc, "Hope Is Important", which was
issued in October on Food Records, the band toured the U.K. again, this
time with Ash, before making their U.S. debut
at the CMJ festival in New York; by early the next year, they scored the
first charting single with "When I Argue I See Shapes", the
track climbed into the top 20 of the British Pop chart.
The quartet resurfaced in spring 2000 with "100 Broken Windows"
entering the U.K. Albums chart at #15; the set featured no less than four
top 40 hit singles in "Little Discourage", "Actually It's
Darkness", "These Wooden Ideas" and "Roseability";
the band also embarked on a national headlining tour as well as a European
trek with Placebo.
Two years later Idlewild crashed into the top 10 of the British Singles
chart with "You Held The World In Your Arms", the track was
released in advance of "The Remote Part", the band's biggest
hit to date, the record soared to #3 on the U.K. Official Albums chart
while the second single, "American English", peaked at #15;
the band supported the release of their third album with a four month-long
European tour, during which they were offered the opening slot of Coldplay's
stadium show, by that fall Fairfoull left to be replaced by Irish bass
player Gavin Fox and Allan Stewart became a permanent member of Idlewild,
graduating from his touring guitarist role into a full-time member of
the band. In spring 2003 "The Remote Part" was finally released
in the U.S. where it reached the #37 position on the Billboard Top Heatseekers
chart.
March 2005 saw the release of the group's long awaited fourth album, "Warnings
/ Promises", which debuted at #9 in the U.K. backed by the top 20
hit single, "Love Steals Us From Loneliness".
Idlewild are back with its new single, "No Emotion"; the track
will be included on the band's forthcoming "Make Another World"
album.
