This Alternative-Metal Funk-Metal outfit was formed in the San Fernando
Valley outpost of Calabasas, California USA, in 1991; initially the band
started out as a four-piece comprising Brandon Boyd on vocals+percussion,
Mike Einziger on guitar, Alex Katunich, real name Dirk Lance, on bass
and Jose Pasillas on drums.
For many years, the group toured throughout Southern California building
a steady fan base; in 1995 turntablist Gavin Koppel, known as DJ Lyfe,
joined Incubus, the band thus became one of the first Rock outfits to
incorporate a DJ into their music; shortly afterwards the quintet recorded
and self-released their debut full-length disc, "Fungus Amongus".
A year later Incubus signed with with Epic subsidiary Immortal Records,
issuing "Enjoy Incubus" in early 1997, a 6-track EP which consisted
of revamped demos.
In September, that same year, "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." was released
as the band's first full-length major label release; they continued to
win fans while opening for bands like Korn,
311, Sublime
and Unwritten Law as well as Ozzfest
tour appearances.
In the summer of 1998 DJ Lyfe left the band, he was replaced by DJ Kilmore.
A year later Incubus issued its third album, "Make Yourself",
which proved to be the band's breakout album, it cracked The Billboard
Top 200 chart peaking at #47 on the strength of three smashes, "Pardon
Me", "Stellar" and "Drive", all settled in the
top 3 spots of The Modern Rock Tracks chart; "Drive" also broke
into the top 10 of The Billboard Hot 100 propelling the album to double-platinum
status.
While planning their next move, the band issued a limited-edition EP of
rarities "When Incubus Attacks, Vol. 1" which rose to #41 on
Billboard's Top 200 list and re-released "Fungus Amongus".
In October 2001 the group released their highly anticipated fourth album,
"Morning View"; the record shot to #2 on The Billboard Top 200
chart yielding yet another string of Modern Rock top 10 singles: "Wish
You Were Here" peaked at #2, "Warning" at #3 and the final
single, "Nice To Know You", hit #9.
In April 2003 the band announced the departure of Dirk Lance, a few months
later bass player Ben Kenney joined their ranks; by the end of the year,
in advance of the album "A Crow Left Of The Murder...", was
issued the single "Megalomaniac" which rocketed to the top of
The Modern Rock Tracks chart, the second single cut, "Talk Shows
On Mute", hit the top 3 of the same chart and pushed "A Crow
Left Of The Murder..." to #2 in the U.S. and to the top spot of the
Canadian Albums chart.
The alternative California alt-rockers released the single "Make
A Move" in mid-2005; the track, which was included on the action-thriller"Stealth",
reached #17 on The Modern Rock chart and #19 on The Mainstream Rock Tracks
list.
In November 2006 Incubus released their sixth studio album, "Light
Grenades", which features the thunderous new single "Anna Molly".
