The Killers is an Alternative-Rock four-men outfit based in Las Vegas,
Nevada USA; singer + keyboardist Brandon Flowers, guitarist David Keuning,
bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci, formed the band in
2002.
The group came to the attention of London-based independent label Lizard
King and they made their way over to the U.K. for their first ever gigs
outside of Las Vegas and a limited edition release of "Mr. Brightside"
in September 2003.
A worldwide deal with Island Records followed later that fall; from here,
The Killers set to work once more: touring the U.K. with Stellastarr*,
writing new material and finally recording their debut album, "Hot
Fuss", which was issued in June of 2004; the CD reached the #13 slot
on The Billboard Top 200, #8 on the Canadian Albums chart and in early
2005 soared to #1 on the Official British chart; "Hot Fuss"
included two Modern Rock top 3 hits, "Somebody Told Me" and
"Mr. Brightside", the latter also landed them on the top 10
of The Billboard Hot 100 for the first time; both of those songs were
ranked in the top 10 in the United Kingdom. The final single, "Smile
Like You Mean It", peaked at #15 on the U.S. Modern Rock radio chart
while the album went multi-platinum, selling 5 million units worldwide.
In October 2006 The Killers released its sophomore album, "Sam's
Town"; the CD shot to #1 on both U.K. and Canadian Albums chart and
fell just short of the top spot in U.S. where the RIAA platinum disc was
listed on The Billboard 200 Albums chart for 42 weeks. The main single,
"When You Were Young", was an instant #1 on The Modern Rock
chart as well as a top 20 hit on The Billboard Hot 100; the second single,
"Read My Mind", peaked at #8 on The Modern Rock chart.
With only two studio releases behind them, the Las Vegas rockers, in November
2007, put out "Sawdust", an album packed with B-sides and rare
material; the 17-song set fared well in U.S. charting at #12 on The Billboard
200 and the lone single from the album, the cover of Joy Division's "Shadowplay",
peaked at #19 on The Hot Modern Rock Tracks.
Exactly one year later, The Killers released their third album of original
material, "Day & Age", which features the Hot Modern Rock
top 10 hit single "Human".
