New York's feminist lesbian Alternative-Rock band Le Tigre started life in 1998 as a three-piece with frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, zine queen Johanna Fateman and videomaker Sadie Benning.

The group's eponymously titled debut album was issued in late 1999 on Mr. Lady Records; it failed to chart, even though Le Tigre supported it with a tour, the line-up at that time was Hanna, Fateman and Benning, with JD Samson running the slide projector, but it was immediately apparent that she should have a more active role in the performances and subsequently became a permanent member when Benning decided she didn't want to be in Le Tigre anymore.
October 2001 saw the release of "Feminist Sweepstakes" which cracked the top 50 of The Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.
Almost exactly three years later, on October 19, 2004, Le Tigre returned to action releasing its third effort, "This Island", on Universal Records; the set hit the top 5 of the Billboard Heatseekers chart and reached the #130 on The Billboard 200 list spawning the minor hit single "TKO"; it also featured a great Pop song with catchy harmonies, the Ric Ocasek-produced "Tell You Now".
