This Alternative-Metal group was founded in Brooklyn, New York USA, in
1989 by vocalist Keith Caputo, guitarist Joey Z., legal name Joseph Zampella
and bassist Alan Robert; the trio, along with several drummers, began
hitting the New York Hardcore Garage scene and eventually snagged opening
slots for acts like Fear Factory and
Motörhead.
Life Of Agony were joined by drummer Sal Abruscato in 1993, just as a
deal was struck with Roadrunner Records for the debut album, "River
Runs Red", released in October that same year.
Almost exactly two years later, the quartet issued "Ugly", the
record which featured a raucous cover version of Simple
Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)", smashed into the top
10 of The Billboard Heatseekers chart and reached the #153 on The Billboard
Top 200 Albums list; the group supported the release by touring with Ozzy
Osbourne, Korn and Anthrax.
Another two years passed before the band returned with its third album,
during this time Abruscato was replaced by drummer Dan Richardson, "Soul
Searching Sun" was finally released in September 1997 and matched
the Billboard's charts position of their previous LP, the first single
released off, "Weeds", debuted at #27 on The Mainstream Rock
chart, followed by another Active Rock top 40 hit in "Tangerine".
Frontman Keith Caputo decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career,
he was briefly replaced by former Ugly Kid Joe vocalist Whitfield Crane;
Life Of Agony officially disbanded in April of 1999.
The classic band line-up of Caputo, Joey Z., Robert and Abruscato were
set to reunite for a sold-out shows at Irving Plaza in New York City on
January 3-4, 2003; their live re-formation was captured for posterity
on the "River Runs Again" album issued through SPV Records worldwide.
Life Of Agony's new album, "Broken Valley", is their first
collection of new material since "Soul Searching Sun", the record
released in June 2005, includes the single "Love To Let You Down".
