Born on March 11, 1968, in Bethesda, Maryland USA and raised in Dallas deeply immersed in the arts, Lisa Loeb studied piano and music theory and wrote her first original songs with lyrics while still in her early teens. She earned her degree in comparative literature from Brown University, where she experienced her first taste of musical success with the duo, Liz and Lisa, with actress Elizabeth Mitchell; in the early '90s, the pair moved to New York where they became a favorite on the Manhattan club circuit and surrounded themselves with like-minded young writers, actors and musicians such as singer+songwriter and fellow Brown classmate Duncan Sheik, who was the guitarist for the band.
Loeb continued over the next few years to hone his voice and musical talent and eventually formed her own band, Nine Stories.

In 1993, Loeb's New York neighbor and pal Ethan Hawke recommended her to "Reality Bites" director Ben Stiller, who in turn included "Stay" on the hit film's soundtrack which was released as a single in spring 1994; the then unsigned artist started to climb the Billboard charts reaching an unexpected #1 position in the Hot 100 Sales, #5 on the Adult Contemporary airplay list and #7 on The Modern Rock Tracks.
Lisa Loeb was eventually signed by Geffen Records who released her debut full-length album, "Tails", in the fall of 1995; it peaked at #30 on The Billboard Top 200 chart going gold and produced one more smash hit, "Do You Sleep?", this track hit the charts #18 on The Billboard Hot 100 and the top 20 of The Modern Rock chart; the final single, "Waiting For Wednesday", was a moderate success, reaching #83 on Billboard's Hot 100 list.
The singer+guitarist & songwriter deliverd her sophomore album, the gold-certified "Firecracker", in November 1997; the set reached the #88 on The Billboard Top 200 chart spawning the smash single "I Do", which rose to #17 on The Billboard Hot 100 and the minor hit, "Let's Forget About It". She also toured extensively with The Wallflowers, Chris Isaak and joined the all-female festival Lilith Fair along with Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls and others.
There was a gap of about five years between Lisa Loeb's second and third albums, in fact she released "Cake And Pie" in early 2002, but her A&M debut failed to become a hit and barely made a ripple on The Billboard 200 chart, peaking at #199; its main single, "Underdog", also spent a few weeks in the lower reaches of the Adult Top 40 list.
Following the commercial failure of this album, she signed with Artemis Records, replaced a few of "Cake And Pie"'s weaker tracks with new material and reissued the album in October 2002, retitling it "Hello Lisa".
Two years later, Loeb reunited with her college music partner, Elizabeth Mitchell, for the children's CD and companion book "Catch The Moon".
"The Way It Really Is", her fifth studio record and her first for Zoe/Rounder, appeared in August 2004 to little fanfare.

Featuring 18 selections, "The Very Best Of Lisa Loeb" includes all of her hits from five albums from 1995 to 2004, the set also contains the new song "Single Me Out".
