Hailing from York, Pennsylvania USA, this Alternative-Rock band officially
formed in 1989 under the name Public Affection, when four longtime friends,
vocalist Ed Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer
and drummer Chad Graceyand recorded a self-financed demo.
Their long-awaited debut album, "Mental Jewelry", came out
on Radioactive Records in fall of 1991, it reached the #73 on The Billboard
Top 200 chart on the back of the smash success of "Operation Spirit
(The Tyranny Of Tradition)", which peaked at #9 on The Modern Rock
Tracks chart; a second single , "Pain Lies On The Riverside",
reached the #24 slot.
The foursome returned in spring 1994 with their sophomore effort, "Throwing
Copper"; it proved to be the breakthrough album for Live, the set
peaked at #1 on The Billboard 200 Albums list on the strength of such
alt-Rock radio favs as "Selling The Drama" and "Lightning
Crashes", both of these singles rose to the top of The Modern Rock
chart with the latter peaking at #1 on The Mainstream Rock chart in early
1995; the second single off the CD, "I Alone", was another huge
Modern and Active radio smash reaching #6 on the Billboard Rock charts;
"All Over You" peaked at #2 and #4 respectively on Mainstream
and Modern Rock charts and the final single, "White, Discussion",
cracked the top 20 of the same charts, while "Throwing Copper"
was certified 6 x platinum.
Their popularity was confirmed by the astonishing success of their third
effort, "Secret Samadhi", which arrived in February 1997; it
became the band's highest U.K. charting album to date, peaking at #31
and went straight to #1 in North-American charts spawning several smash
singles including "Lakini's Juice" which hit #1 on The Modern
Rock chart and #2 on Mainstream Rock list, "Freaks" climbed
into the top 5 of the Billboard's Active Rock chart, "Turn My Head"
peaked at #3 on both Mainstream and Modern Rock charts and "Rattlesnake"
hit the top 20 of the same charts.
In October 1999, the quartet released "The Distance To Here",
the record shot to #1 on the Top Canadian Albums chart but failed to hit
the top spot, stalling at #4, on The Billboard 200 list, however they
continued to burn up the U.S. airplay Rock singles charts with "The
Dolphin's Cry", it peaked at # 2 and #3 respectively on Billboard's
Mainstream and Modern Rock Tracks, "Run To The Water" which
cracked the top 20 of the same charts and "They Stood Up For Love"
was a further Active Rock top 30 entry.
Live resurfaced two years later with "V"; their fifth studio
album failed to match either the commercial or critical success of previous
efforts reaching the top 5 in Canada and the #22 slot on The Billboard
Top 200 south of the border; the first single, "Simple Creed"
reached #11 and #18 respectively on Mainstream and Modern Rock airplay
charts and "Overcome" hit the top 30 of The Modern Rock Tracks
list.
Their next album, "Birds Of Pray", was released one and a half
years later, reaching #28 on The Billboard 200; its main single, "Heaven",
peaked at #4 on Adult Top 40 chart and also appeared in the top 40 of
the Billboard's Rock charts; "Run Away" was another U.S. triple-A
radio top 20 hit.
"Awake: The Best Of Live", a deluxe 19-song compilation CD spanning
the entire 13-year recording history of the acclaimed Pennsylvania rockers,
was released in late 2004, the set reached the #65 spot on The Billboard
Top 200 and included "We Deal In Dreams", a previously-unreleased
track from the band's 1994 "Throwing Copper" sessions, which
cracked the Modern Adult top 40 chart.
With over 20 million albums sold, Live continue to be a major musical
force, "Songs From Black Mountain", their new CD, was released
in June 2006; "The River" is the first single off of the band's
seventh album of new material.
