M.I.A., otherwise known as Maya Arulpragasam, the daughter of a Tamil rebel, was born on July 17, 1977 in Hounslow, the principal town in the London Borough of Hounslow ENGLAND, but she spent little time there as, at only 6 months old, her parents moved the family back to their native Sri Lanka. Eventually, as the civil war escalated, it became unsafe for Maya, her older sister, younger brother and mother to stay in Sri Lanka, so her father sent tickets for them to relocate to Madras in India. But Maya's mother with the three children finally returned to London, where they were housed as refugees.
Maya Arulpragasam was a talented and creative student, eventually winning a place at London's Central Saint Martins Art School, where she studied fine art, film and video. Here, for the first time, she began to piece together some of the different strands of her life experience, thereby laying the foundation of what was to become her one-woman act.

M.I.A. hooked up with XL Recordings and duly delivered her debut album, "Arular", in March 2005 infusing a blend of Hip-Hop and chunky electro-Rock with raw, tribal overtones and a healthy dose of sex appeal. The first single, "Galang", would eventually propel M.I.A. into the limelight, it peaked at #11 on the U.S. Hot Dance Singles Sales and the album crawled up to #16 on the Billboard Top Independent chart. She followed its release by touring North America with Gwen Stefani.

Recorded in India, Trinidad, Australia, London, New York and Baltimore, "Kala", M.I.A.'s sophomore full-length disc, the first release was named after her freedom-fighting father, this one after her mother, was released in August 2007. It peaked at #18 on The Billboard 200 Albums list producing the Billboard Hot 100 top 5 hit "Paper Planes".
