The Electro-Pop duo MGMT, pronounced management, is comprised
of multi-instrumentalists Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, two
guys whose paths first intersected on the campus of Wesleyan University
in Middletown, Connecticut USA, circa 2002.
Three years later, the pair went on to issue on the indie label Cantora
Records, their very first commercial release, a 6-song EP called "Time
To Pretend".
Following the release of the EP and a couple of one-month long tours,
MGMT took six months off, with Vanwyngarden moving to Brooklyn for a post-college
existential crisis and Goldwasser hanging out in Connecticut
before heading to upstate New York to work woodland construction.
Following their hiatus from MGMT, Vanwyngarden and Goldwasser reconnoitered
in Brooklyn and began recording new songs for the sheer fun of it on an
Mbox computer set-up. Those humble home sessions lay the groundwork
for what would become their debut full-length disc.
The album, "Oracular Spectacular", was released by Red Ink/Columbia
in January 2008 and quickly broke into The Billboard 200 producing the
Hot Modern Rock top 40 hit "Time To Pretend".
