Comprised of the New Delhi-born vocalist + synthesizer player Emily Haines,
guitarist James Shaw, bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott
Key, the Electro-Rock troop Metric originally formed in New York City
in the late '90s, but found a new home in Toronto, CANADA, where they
signed to Last Gang Records.
The label released Metric's debut full-length album, the acclaimed "Old
World Underground, Where Are You Now?", in September 2003; the band
has created its own sound by blending New Wave and modern Rock; not only
are the lyrics clever and sarcastic, but also the songs are quite catchy,
the first single, "Dead Disco" is a prime example of this.
The follow-up album, 2005's "Live It Out", was a little more
guitar-based and slightly less electronic than their debut, a move likely
to broaden their fan base even further. It reached the #44 position on
the U.S. Top Independent Albums chart and spawned the Canadian smash hit
"Monster Hospital".
Two years later Metric's very first full-length album, "Grow Up
And Blow Away", was finally released after an eight year delay, by
Last Gang Records. The album was initially scheduled for release in 1999
but was eventually postponed several times due to label conflicts.
In April 2009 the quartet released their fourth full-length studio album,
"Fantasies"; it quickly scaled the Top Canadian Albums chart
landing at #6 and in the U.S. the disc reached the #76 position on The
Billboard 200. The first single, "Help I'm Alive", got a toehold
on the Canadian Sales chart just outside the top 20 at #21 and hit #17
on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks. The album featured two more minor hits:
"Gimme Sympathy" and "Sick Muse".
