Michael Doughty was born on June 10, 1970 in Fort Knox, Kentucky USA; he began his music career in the early '90s with Soul Coughing, a New York City experimental Alternative-Rock band that never really broke into the mainstream and finally disbanded in the spring of 2000.

That same year Mike Doughty released his debut solo album, "Skittish", exclusively through his own website, the bulk of this compilation is comprised of songs written and performed by Doughty in 1996, in the midst of recording sessions for Soul Coughing's second album.
Cleaned up from an addiction to heroin, he guested on BT's "Never Gonna Come Back Down" and helped propel the track into the top 20 of The Modern Rock chart.
July 2002 saw the release of the acoustic concert album "Smofe + Smang: Live In Minneapolis"; Doughty followed it a year later with an EP of new material, "Rockity Roll".
In 2004, ATO Records stepped in, offering the reinvented singer+songwriter a solo deal, the label re-released as a two-disc set "Skittish" and "Rockity Roll", adding unreleased tracks and outtakes.
Mike Doughty delivered his first full-length album of all-new-material in May 2005; the 12-song set, entitled "Haughty Melodic", was recorded in Minneapolis with some of Twin Cities' finest musicians, it reached the top 10 of The Billboard Magazine's Heatseekers chart with its lead single, "Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well", leading the way.

The artist returned in February 2008 with "Golden Delicious"; his latest album landed in the upper half of The Billboard 200 chart thanks to some radio-friendly adult alternative tunes such as "27 Jennifers", which was originally found on the 2003 EP "Rockity Roll" and the second single, "Fort Hood".
