The New Jersey USA-based Alternative-Metal outfit, Monster Magnet, who
started out as a trio in the late '80s, was originally comprised of vocalist+guitarist
David Wyndorf, guitarist John McBain and vocalist+drummer Tim Cronin.
Widely influenced from the '70s Hard-Rock, the band expanded to include
bassist Joe Calandra and a new drummer, Jon Kleiman; in 1990 Monster Magnet
released a self-titled six-track EP on European label Glitterhouse, the
quintet then signed to Caroline Records issuing their debut full-length
disc, "Spine Of God".
During 1992 the group recorded another EP, "25...Tab" and toured
America in support of Soundgarden,
the buzz landed them a contract with A&M Records; before the band
headed back into the studio for the next release, Cronin opted to stay
behind and McBain was fired, Ed Mundell was introduced as the new lead
guitarist, in the spring of 1993 was finally issued the band's second
album, "Superjudge".
Two years later "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" climbed The Billboard's
Mainstream Rock chart reaching the #19, the track was taken from their
third LP, "Dopes To Infinity"; the band spent a lot of time
on the road with Corrosion
Of Conformity to promote it.
The commercial breakthrough album, "Powertrip" saw the light
in mid-1998, it smashed at #1 on the Billboard's Top Heatseekers and cracked
the top 100 of The Billboard 200 Albums charts; the record generated three
Mainstream Rock charting singles: "Space Lord" rose to the #3
slot, the title-track entered the top 20 and "Temple Of Your Dreams"
hit #25.
Following an extensive tour, during which Monster Magnet introduced the
new rhythm guitarist Phil Caivano and co-headlined dates with Aerosmith,
Metallica, Queens
Of The Stone Age and Megadeth, the band
released the single "Silver Future" which debuted at #15 on
Active Rock chart and prefaced the group's fifth album, "God Says
No", it reached the #153 on The Billboard 200 list upon its release
in April 2001 and spawned one more Mainstream Rock top 30 hit , "Heads
Explode".
In early 2003 the band's former rhythm section split; while the remaining
members began work on the new album, "Monolithic Baby", Jim
Baglino replaced Calandra on bass, Bob Pantella took the place of Kleiman
behind the drum kit; the album was released in May 2004 on the independent
label SPV, the lead single, "Unbroken (Hotel Baby)", reached
the #31 on The Mainstream Rock chart.
