This Synth-Pop band was formed in Manchester, ENGLAND following the deth
of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, he committed suicide in May 1980.
The three remaining members, guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook
and drummer Stephen Morris continued under the name New Order; with Sumner
taking on the role of vocalist and with the addition of Morris' girlfriend
keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, the line-up was complete.
In the spring of 1981 the quartet recorded their first single, "Ceremony",
which quickly reached the U.K. Top 40 chart, that same year they released
their first full-length disc, "Movement".
Two years later, the group delivered its second album, "Power, Corruption
& Lies", which included "Blue Monday", released in
12-inch format only, it spent nearly one year in the U.K. chart becoming
the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time in Britain and their most
popular international single, moving over three million copies worldwide.
The next album, 1985's "Low-Life", cracked The Billboard Top
200 chart reaching the #94 slot on the back of the Hot Dance top 5 hit,
"The Perfect Kiss".
The band's fourth effort, "Brotherhood", followed a year later
but did not match the success of its predecessor.
New Order released in 1987 the non-album single "True Faith"
which climbed into the top 5 of the Official U.K. chart and peaked at
#32 on The Billboard Hot 100.
The following year Quincy Jones remixed an old hit and released "Blue
Monday 1988", the latter of which topped the Dance charts in the
United States.
1989's "Technique", recorded in Ibiza, contained two Modern
Rock singles: the top 3 hit "Fine Time" and the #6 "Round
And Round".
Around this time Sumner started a side project named Electronic with Johnny
Marr, former guitarist of The Smiths and Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys.
New Order came back together in 1993 when they recorded and released "Republic",
which featured the #1 Modern Rock smash single "Regret" plus
the top 5 hit "World".
Subsequently the group's membership would return to varied solo projects,
in 2000, the band contributed the song "Brutal" to the soundtrack
of the Danny Boyle film "The Beach".
The full-length album "Get Ready" followed one year later, their
first album of new material in eight years; The
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan
joined the veteran British act as a touring guitarist for select dates
and he can be heard on the track "Turn My Way", the album peaked
at #6 in the U.K. chart and reached the #41 spot on The Billboard Top
200 chart spawning three singles: "Crystal" hit #8 on the British
chart, "60 Miles An Hour" made top 30 and "Someone Like
You" was aminor hit.
In October 2002 New Order issued the retrospective compilation "International"
which featured the previously unreleased song "Here To Stay",
the single peaked at #15 in Britain.
The band released in spring 2005 their eighth studio album, "Waiting
For The Sirens' Call" which includes the single "Krafty".
