Nick Lowe was born on March 24, 1949, in Suffolk, ENGLAND, but because
his father was a pilot in the Royal Air Force, he mostly grew up in Cyprus
and Jordan. Given his father's vocation, Lowe spent most of his time with
his mother.
In 1968, Lowe received a phone call from guitarist Brinsley Schwarz,
an old school friend who had landed himself a record deal with EMI. Schwarz's
group was a fairly generic British Pop-Rock outfit called Kippington Lodge
and Lowe signed on as a lead singer and bassist. At the end of 1969, though,
five singles later, the band hadn't scored so much as a minor hit.
Lowe then hooked up with his old manager Dave Robinson and his new manager
Jake Riviera to start Stiff Records in 1976 but after Elvis
Costello's debut album, "My Aim Is True", he left Stiff,
along with Costello and followed Jake Riviera to his new label, Radar.
By 1978, Nick Lowe issued his solo debut album "Jesus Of Cool"
which featured his first U.K. top 10 hit, "(I Love The Sound Of)
Breaking Glass"; the LP, released in the U.S. as "Pure Pop For
Now People", reached #127 on Pop Albums chart.
The next year he married Country-Rock singer Carlene Carter and after
touring the United States with his backup band, Rockpile, Lowe recorded
and released "Labour Of Lust", the disc peaked at #31 on the
American Pop Albums chart while the main single, "Cruel To Be Kind",
shot to #12 on both the U.S. and U.K. Pop charts.
At the close of the '70s, Nick Lowe was on top of the mountain. The '80s
were another story.
He continued to produce good records for other acts and in early 1982
released his proper third LP, "Nick The Knife", which reached
the #50 position on the Billboard's Pop Albums chart and the main single,
"Stick It Where The Sun Don't Shine", failed to chart.
As the decade progressed, Lowe drank too much, gave up producing altogether
and recorded four albums, 1983's "The Abominable Showman", one
year later "Nick Lowe And His Cowboy Outfit", "The Rose
Of England" in 1985 and 1988's "Pinker And Prouder Than Previous",
but neither of these albums were able to crack the top 100 of The Billboard
200 list producing only one Mainstream Rock top 30 hit with "I Knew
The Bride (When She Used To Rock 'N' Roll)" in 1985.
It was around this time that Lowe suffered from depression. Friends tried
to snap him out of it, Costello got him to produce his 1986 album, "Blood
& Chocolate" but with limited success.
And in 1990, his marriage to Carlene Carter ended in divorce; that same
year he released "Party Of One" which made a brief chart intrusion
on The Billboard Top 200 Albums list at #182.
Nick Lowe returned in November 1994 with "The Impossible Bird";
it's easily his most mature and personal album to date.
January 1998 saw the release of "Dig My Mood". "The Convincer"
followed in October 2001 reaching the #36 position on the U.S. Top Independent
Albums chart.
"At My Age" is the latest album from Nick Lowe and his first
in nearly six years, the horn-drenched track "The Club" is the
highlight but there are many solid cuts here; the set was released in
June 2007 and went top 30 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
