The San Diego, California USA-based Nickel Creek were formed in 1989
by a young guitarist+vocalist, Sean Watkins, he was 12 at the time, with
his younger sister Sara, a fiddler+vocalist and mandolin+banjo player
& vocalist Chris Thile.
Experimenting with their own brand of music that draws from the uniquely
American Folk-Rock, Bluegrass, Celtic and Jazz, in 1998 the trio scored
a deal with Sugar Hill Records who released their self-titled debut album
in the spring of 2000; the record smashed into the top 3 on both Billboard's
Top Heatseekers and Independent Albums charts as well as a mid-chart appearance
on The Billboard Top 200 list.
Two years later, "This Side" was even more successful, reaching
the top spot on The Independent Albums chart, the #2 on The Top Country
list and the #18 on The Billboard 200 chart; the record, which included
Pavement's "Spit On A Stranger",
was awarded a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
In August 2005 Nickel Creek released their third album, "Why Should
The Fire Die?"; the set features the tripleA radio-single cut "When
In Rome".
