Alternative-Rock band formed in Southern California USA in fall 1986 as a Ska-Punk act; at that time the band comprised singer John Spence, keyboardist Eric Stefani and his sister Gwen as backing vocals; a few months later the trio recruited bassist Tony Kanal.
On December 21, 1987 tragically, Spence committed suicide.
When No Doubt decided to continue, Gwen Stefani became the lone vocalist, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young was added to the line-up and the group evolved into a solid five-piece unit.

In 1991 they signed a deal with Interscope Records; the following year, the group recorded their self-titled debut full-length album.
The band began the first sessions for the next album in March of 1993, it was recorded in 11 different studios over two and a half years, in the meantime Eric Stefani left to continue as an animator on "The Simpsons", in early 1995 the band self-released "The Beacon Street Collection" which contained B-Sides and other cuts Ska-Punk inspired than the debut.
"Tragic Kingdom", their second release, saw the light in fall 1995, the first single, "Just A Girl", peaked at #10 on Modern Rock Tracks chart, followed the #5 "Spiderwebs" and the power ballad "Don't Speak" which rose to the #1 spot in the same chart. The group ended 1996 with their album at the top of The Billboard 200 chart, the success continued in Europe and Australia selling eleven million unit total, two years after its release another single, "Excuse Me Mr.", charted at #17 on Billboard's Modern Rock.
"The Return Of Saturn" was issued in the spring of 2000, preceded by the #2 Modern Rock smash single "Ex-Girlfriend", the album debuted at #2 in U.S. and at #4 in Canada, it also included the American Top 40 hit "Simple Kind Of Life" and by the time reached the platinum status.
Gwen Stefani with Moby shot in 2001 the single, "South Side" which peaked at #3 on Modern Rock chart.
No Doubt's fifth album, "Rock Steady", came out in December 2001, influenced by Rap and Techno, failed to hit the Rock charts, but "Hey Baby" and "Underneath It All" crashed into the top 5 of The Billboard Hot 100 and both won a Grammy Awards for Group's Best Pop Performance with vocal; the third single off, "Hella Good", peaked at #13 on Billboard's Hot 100, eventually the album entered the top 10 on The Billboard Top 200 chart.
In September 2003 the quartet returned to the studio and cut the cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life" which smashed into the top 10 of The Billboard Hot 100; the track was included on the retrospective album "The Singles 1992-2003" which hit #2 on The Billboard 200 list.
The following year Gwen Stefani released her debut solo album, "Love, Angel, Music, Baby".
