Born on March 30, 1979, in New York City, New York USA and raised in
a suburb of Dallas, Norah Jones attended the Booker T. Washington High
School and after exposure to several instruments, she realized she wanted
to play the piano. For two years following her graduation from high school,
she studied at the University of North Texas, majoring in Jazz piano.
In 1999 Jones moved to New York City where she immersed herself in the
local music scene. Between waitressing jobs, Norah Jones soon started
a group around guitarist Jesse Harris, bass player Lee Alexander and ex-Marcy
Playground drummer Dan Rieser, in which she sung lead vocals and of
course, played piano.
After being signed with Blue Note Records, whose roster boasts a host
of Blues, Jazz and Folk musicians, Norah Jones released her debut album,
"Come Away With Me". The disc became a phenomenal success topping
the chart in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia selling
over 20 million copies worlwide.
She enjoyed a stunning sweep at the Grammy Awards in 2003, picking up
five trophies: Best New Artist, Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album,
Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the Billboard Hot 100 top 30 hit
single "Don't Know Why" which was also awarded as Record Of
The Year.
Released in February 2004, her second effort, "Feels Like Home",
immediately jumped to #1 all over the globe. It was certified four times
platinum in U.S. and she won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
for the album's first single: "Sunrise".
In January 2007, the sultry-voiced neo-Jazz singer returned with her
third offering, "Not Too Late"; it was another #1 album in 20
countries, although its numbers didn't match those of "Feels Like
Home". The first single, "Thinking About You", became Jones'
first single to chart on The Billboard Hot 100 since "Don't Know
Why".
Norah Jones has taken a new direction on her next album, "The Fall",
experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including
Jacquire King, a noted producer who has worked with Kings
Of Leon and Modest Mouse. The
CD issued, in November 2009, includes the lead single "Chasing Pirates"
which debuted in the top 40 of the Billboard's Rock Songs chart.
