Pearl Jam is unquestionably one of the most popular American Alternative-Rock band of the '90s; emerging from the Seattle Grunge scene, the group was formed in October of 1990 with the original line-up of Eddie Vedder on vocals, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready on guitars, Jeff Ament on bass and Dave Krusen on drums.

The quintet began performing under the name Mookie Blaylock, but in 1991, during the recording of "Ten", the band changed its name to Pearl Jam.
In the meantime, the majority of the group appeared on the Andrew Wood tribute project, Temple Of The Dog with Soundgarden's members, singer Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron; Andrew Wood was the vocalist of Mother Love Bone, he died of an heroin overdose in 1990.

Dave Krusen left the band in May 1991, four months later Dave Abbruzzese joined Pearl Jam on drums. Their debut album eventually reached the #2 slot on The Billboard Top 200 chart spawning a series of radio-Rock smash singles with the Mainstream Rock top 3 hit "Even Flow", the top 20 hit "Alive" and "Jeremy" which peaked at #5 on both Modern and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts; the final single, "Black", was another huge hit in early 1993 peaking at #3 on The Mainstream Rock list and helped to propel "Ten" to five platinum certifications.
Later that year, the track "Crazy Mary", taken from benefit project "Sweet Relief", crashed into the top 10 of The Modern Rock chart.
October 1993 saw the release of Pearl Jam's second effort, "Vs.", which went straight to the top of The Billboard 200 Albums chart and also went multi-platinum, bolstered by another stream of hits including the Active Rock top 3 hit "Go", the magnificent "Daughter" which hit the #1 spots on both Modern and Mainstream Rock charts, the Modern Rock top 3 hit "Dissident" and "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" which peaked at #17 in the same chart; the band's sophomore album peaked at #2 on the British chart and yielded a further U.S. Mainstream Rock hit with "Animal", the track reached the #21 slot in this chart.
In 1994, "Yellow Ledbetter", which was released two years earlier, as the B-side of the "Jeremy" single, appeared in the top 30 of the Billboard's Rock airplay charts.
Also in 1994 Pearl Jam, issued their third full-length album, "Vitalogy", which became multi-platinum in the States where it went to #1 on the Albums Sales chart; the album was prefaced by the hit single "Tremor Christ" which debuted at #18 on The Billboard Hot 100 and reached #16 on both Active and Modern Rock Tracks charts; in addition, the album spun off no less than five more Mainstream and Modern Rock top 20 hit singles including the #1 "Better Man", "Corduroy", "Immortality", "Not For You" and "Spin The Black Circle", the latter of which won them a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.

After the departure of Abbruzzese, in January of 1995 Jack lrons, formerly of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, became the group's new drummer and before the year's end the band released the CD-single "Merkinball" which featured two songs recorded during the sessions for Neil Young's impromptu "Mirror Ball" record, on which various members of Pearl Jam served as Young's backing band; "I Got ID" , more commonly known as "I Got Shit" by fans, climbed into the top 3 of the U.S. Rock airplay charts and hit #7 on The Billboard Hot 100.
In early 1996 the quintet contributed the Active Rock top 30 track, "Leaving Here", to the non-profit double-CD "Home Alive: The Art Of Self Defense".
Later that year, Pearl Jam found themselves at the top of The Billboard 200 list once again with "No Code" and the album also hit the top 3 in Britain; in America, its main single, "Who You Are", shot to #1 on The Modern Rock chart, peaked at #5 on Mainstream Rock Tracks and reached #31 on The Billboard Hot 100; the second radio-single, "Hail Hail", also broke into the top 10 on both Mainstream and Modern Rock charts and the final single, "Off He Goes", made top 40 here.
In early 1998, at a time when many other Seattle disciples were lapsing into inactivity, the band delivered its fifth studio record, "Yield", another platinum seller that peaked at #2 in U.S. and Canada and hit #5 on the U.K. Top 40 chart; this album contained four hit singles: "Given To Fly" peaked at #2 in Canada, at #12 in Britain and at #21 on The Billboard Hot 100 receiving massive airplay on both active and modern rock radio as it climbs up to #1 and #3 respectively on the Billboard charts; "Wishlist" was another worldwide success reaching the #7 spot on the Canadian Singles Sales chart, the top 30 in the U.K. and the #47 position in the U.S. where continued to burn up The Modern and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts peaking in the top 10; "In Hiding" entered the top 20 and "Do The Evolution" the top 40 in the same charts.
That fall the band issued the concert LP "Live On Two Legs"; this album, which sold a million copies in U.S. alone, accurately captured the band's live intensity that made them Rock heroes; Jack Irons did not participate due to poor health and was replaced by former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron.
In the spring of 1999 Pearl Jam released their highest Hot 100 charting track, the cover of the 1964's Pop tune "Last Kiss", originally by J. Frank Wilson; the CD-single made as a benefit for Kosovo refugees hit #2 on The Billboard Hot 100, also #2 on The Modern Rock Tracks and #5 on The Mainstream Rock chart.
The following year, after the release of their sixth studio-effort, "Binaural", which brought the band into the top 3 of The Billboard 200 chart, the group issued a series of official bootlegs: 72 different live-CDs, each containing a single concert in its entirety. "Binaural" which also hit #2 on the Top Canadian Albums chart yielded the single "Nothing As It Seems", a #1 smash in Canada and a modest top 50 south of the border; however it rose to #3 on The Mainstream Rock aiplay chart and to #10 on The Modern Rock Tracks. The follow-up single "Light Years" hit the top 20 on both Canadian Sales chart and U.S. album Rock-radio chart.

In January 2002 from "I Am Sam" soundtrack, Eddie Vedder performed solo "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" reaching the top 30 of The Modern Rock chart.

By the end of that same year, Vedder reunited with the rest of Pearl Jam, released "Riot Act", it peaked at #5 on The Billboard Top 200 Albums chart while the lead single, "I Am Mine", hit #6 and #7 respectively on Modern and Mainstream Rock charts and soared to #2 on the Canadian Singles chart; "Save You" was another Canadian top 20 hit but barely sneaked into the top 30 of the Billboard's Rock airplay charts.

In May 2006 the veteran alt-Rock band returned with their, self-titled, eighth studio album; first single "World Wide Suicide" became the fastest-charting song of the group's career, reaching #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in just two weeks.
