Pretenders formed in 1978 in London, ENGLAND, featuring an American expatriate
vocalist+guitarist & songwriter Chrissie Hynde, who grew up in Akron,
Ohio; Hynde assembled the original line-up, enlisting guitarist James
Honeyman-Scott, bassist Pete Farndon and drummer Martin Chambers. Their
melodic but hard-charging sound suggested a union of Punk and New Wave
approaches and they took off almost instantly.
Their first successful recordings in England was a version of Ray
Davies' "Stop Your Sobbing"; produced by Nick
Lowe, the single, climbed into the U.K. Top 40 chart in 1979 and later
reached #65 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart.
The band's debut album, "Pretenders", released worldwide in
January 1980, was universally lauded, it quickly took roost at the top
of the British Sales chart; "Brass In Pocket" hit #1 in the
U.K. and Australia and peaked at #14 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart. After
whipping off another top 10 hit single, "Talk Of The Town" for
the British market, Hynde brought her band stateside, where its album
was rising to #9.
