Formed in 1984 in Glasgow, SCOTLAND, the experimental Rock band Primal
Scream have influenced a generation of fans over their 20 year career;
fronted by Bobby Gillespie, who first found fame playing drums for The
Jesus And Mary Chain, with keyboardist Martin Duffy, guitarists Andrew
Innes and Robert Young, they signed to Creation Records in 1985.
The quintet released its debut album, "Sonic Flower Groove",
in autumn 1987, garnering critical praise and a huge underground following.
Two years later, their follow-up album, "Primal Scream", witnessed
a musical progression for the band, but it was 1991's Mercury Music Prize
winning "Screamadelica" which became their landmark release,
this album hit the top 10 in Britain and the top 40 of the American Heatseekers
chart highlighted by "Movin' On Up", which rose to #2 on Billboard's
Modern Rock chart and two more Modern Rock top 20 smashes, "Come
Together" and "Loaded", the latter of which also climbed
into the U.K. Top 20. "Screamadelica" changed the face of British
Pop music with its kaleidoscopic fusion of Dance, Dub, Acid-House and
Rock, putting Primal Scream at the top of their game.
The enduring Glaswegian rockers returned in March 1994 with "Give
Out But Don't Give Up" which was recorded in Nashville and featured
the single "Rocks", it reached the #16 position on the U.S.
Modern Rock airplay chart and became the band's first U.K. top 10 hit;
the album stuttered at #22 on U.S. Top Heatseekers chart and entered the
U.K. Top 3.
In 1996, former Stone Roses bass player Robert 'Mani' Mounfield joined
the group and a year later, thus reconfigured, Primal Scream created a
more complex dynamic of the indie allure which characterised their debut
release, the resulting album, "Vanishing Point", rose to #2
on the national sales chart re-establishing the group as a major force
in British Rock; it contained three U.K. top 20 hits including the #8
"Kowalski", "Star" and "Burning Wheel".
Released a mere three months after "Vanishing Point", the band's
next record, "Echo Dek", was a remix album done by Adrian Sherwood,
one of the most influential Dub-Reggae DJ.
Three years on from "Vanishing Point", Primal Scream returned
in May 2000 with the abrasive "XTRMNTR", it was the group's
third consecutive top 3 album in the U.K. and included the top 30 blazing
singles "Swastika Eyes" and "Kill All Hippies".
Another British top 10 album, "Evil Heat", followed in the summer
of 2002 generating a top 30 hit with the single "Miss Lucifer".
In 2003 the group released their "Dirty Hits" collection, a
retrospective of their career to date.
Primal Scream's newest album, "Riot City Blues", was released
in August 2006; its main single, "Country Girl", achieved a
career-best peak of #5 on the country's single tally.
