Regina Spektor was born in Moscow, RUSSIA, on February 18, 1980; since her whole family was interested in music, it was quite natural that she took to music, her father was a photographer by profession but was an amateur violinist and her mother was a music professor in a Russian conservatory. Regina began learning to play the piano when she was 6, studying classical music and listening to Classic-Rock.
She and her family moved from what was then still the Soviet Union during the Perestroika era, after stopping off in Austria and Italy, the Spektors eventually settled in the Bronx, New York, in 1989.

In 2001, Regina Spektor finished her graduation in music from the Purchase College New York, she was noticed for her performances in the anti-Folk scene in downtown in the New York City, at the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe and that same year she released independently her debut album, "11:11"; the sparse recordings consisted solely of Spektor's voice and piano accompaniment.
A year later the follow-up, "Songs", followed the same minimalist pattern.

In 2003 she returned with "Soviet Kitsch" and then embarked upon her first ever concert tour that fall, opening for The Strokes on their North American tour; eventually, it was Sire Records that secured the talented singer + songwriter with a contract and in August 2004 the label reissued "Soviet Kitsch".

After a gap of two years, in mid-2006, she released her next album, "Begin To Hope", recorded with electric guitar, drum machines and seductive electronic loops, finding new canvases for her provocative vocal style. It was Spektor's first Billboard charting CD, peaking at #20 on the U.S. Top 200 Albums list; the 12-track set contained the single "Fidelity" which reached the #51 position on The Billboard Hot 100. The album also sold well in Europe and Australia.

Regina Spektor's fifth studio album, "Far", was released in June 2009, preceded by the single "Laughing With". It peaked at #3 on The Billboard 200 and at # 16 on the Top Canadian Albums chart.
