The Hardcore Thrash-Metal act, Soulfly formed from the ashes of Sepultura,
a band with a storied history that dates back to mid-'80s Brazil. Max
Cavalera formed the group as a teen-ager and stayed on for nearly 15 years,
until internal tensions and management disputes, Cavalera married Sepultura
manager, Gloria Bujnowski, who was more than twice his age, splintered
the band into various factions. Cavalera then moved on, forming Soulfly
in 1997, in Los Angeles, California USA; the band's first line-up included
Jackson Bandeira on second guitar, Marcello Dias on bass and drummer Roy
'Rata' Mayorga.
In April of 1998, they released their eponymous debut effort which featured
guest appearances by Chino Moreno from Deftones,
Fred Durst and DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit,
Eric Bobo from Cypress Hill and Burton
C. Bell, Dino Cazares and Christian Olde Wolbers from Fear
Factory; the album crashed into the The Billboard 200 chart peaking
at #79 and stormed many European charts.
After several changes which included the addition of guitarist Mike Doling
and drummer Joe Nunez, Soulfly's second album, "Primitive",
arrived in September 2000, it reached the #32 position on the American
Billboard Top 200 list. The group then embarked on an extensive international
tour; a year later Nunez left the band, Mayorga took over the drum chair
and shortly after some American dates with Static-X
and Soil, in early 2002, Cavalera and company returned
back to the studio for their next album, "3", which was released
that summer; it climbed into the top 50 of the U.S. Billboard Top 200,
reached the top 30 in Australia and also had significant chart success
in Europe.
Roy Mayorga exited in September 2003 after Dias left the group, eventually
Nunez returned to the fold, a year later Cavalera was joined by former
Ill Niño guitarist Marc Rizzo and
by bass player Bobby Burns; they were in place in time for the sessions
for "Prophecy"; the band's fourth album made a mid-chart appearance
peaking only at #82 on The Billboard Top 200 chart.
Preceded by the single "Carved Inside", Soulfly's "Dark
Ages" was released in October 2005, the CD reached #155 on The Billboard
200.
In early 2008, Max Cavalera partnered with his brother Iggor in Cavalera
Conspiracy, releasing "Inflikted". At the same time, he
managed to write and record "Conquer", the sixth Soulfly album
which includes the single "Unleash".
