The Alternative-Metal four-piece band Taproot first came together in
Ann Arbor, Michigan USA, in 1997 with vocalist+guitarist Stephen Richards,
guitarist Michael DeWolf, bassist Philip Lipscomb and drummer Jarrod Montague.
The guys earned a passionate and faithful following among discerning
heavy-Rock loyalists via searing live performances; they released an indie-EP
called "Mentobe" and eventually scored a deal with Atlantic
subsidiary Velvet Hammer issuing their full-length debut, "Gift",
in June 2000; the record was a moderate success, reaching the #160 position
on The Billboard 200 chart and produced a couple of Mainstream Rock top
40 hit: "Again And Again" and "I".
The group continued to tour incessantly opening for an array of headliners,
Slipknot, Papa
Roach, Deftones, Incubus,
Linkin Park and in October of 2002
released their second album, "Welcome", which rose to the #17
slot on The Billboard Top 200 list while the main single, "Poem",
peaked at #5 on The Mainstream Rock chart and at #10 on The Modern Rock
Tracks; it was followed by one more top 30 hit, "Mine".
Taproot returned in mid-2005 with its third national release, "Blue-Sky
Research", the 13-song set featured guest appearances by Billy
Corgan and Stephen Carpenter from Deftones,
it quickly broke into the top 40 of The Billboard 200 and the first single
off of the CD, "Calling", soon climbed the Active Rock airplay
chart, barely falling short of cracking the top 10; their next single,
"Birthday", made it to the top 40.
After a couple of years off the Rock radar, the Michigan quartet has
set a September 16, 2008, release date for their new album, "Our
Long Road Home"; it includes the single "Wherever I Stand".
