Temple Of The Dog was essentially a tribute-album, emerged from the Seattle
music scene and brought together singer Chris
Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron of Soundgarden
with the surviving members of Mother
Love Bone, later of Pearl Jam, bassist
Jeff Ament, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready plus then-unknown
vocalist Eddie Vedder. It was recorded
as a tribute to their fallen friend, Andrew Wood, the late vocalist of
Mother Love Bone, who was found
overdosed on heroin on March 16, 1990; Wood was pronounced dead three
days later. The name was taken from one of Wood's lyrics and the songs
bore the street-rock flavor of Mother
Love Bone's music.
The supergroup issued its eponymous effort on December 31, 1990 on A&M
Records, but the album reached the #5 slot on The Billboard Top 200 chart
one and a half years after its release; it includes two popular singles:
"Say Hello 2 Heaven" which hit #5 on The Mainstream Rock chart
and the superb duet between Vedder and Cornell, "Hunger Strike",
this single made a significant impact at Mainstream and Modern Rock radio
as it climbs up to #4 and #7 respectively on the Billboard charts.
