This Alternative-Rock band was formed in the mid-'90s in San Francisco,
California USA and originally comprised lead singer + guitarist Stephan
Jenkins, guitarist Kevin Cadogan, bass player Arion Salazar and drummer
Brad Hargreaves. Not long after forming they recorded a demo, eventually
winning opening slot for Oasis' April 1996
concert at San Francisco's Civic Auditorium.
Third Eye Blind then signed with Elektra Records and began recording
their debut album; the eponymously titled set was released in April 1997,
it peaked at #25 on The Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for well
over a year, selling 6 million copies. The first single, "Semi-Charmed
Life", rocketed to the top position on The Modern Rock chart and
climbed into the top 5 on The Billboard Hot 100. The album spun off four
more singles including the massive hits, "How's It Going To Be"
which peaked at #5 on The Modern Rock Tracks and at #9 on The Billboard
Hot 100, "Jumper" also grabbed a #9 and a #5 spots, respectively,
on the same charts; "Graduate" reached #14 on the Billboard's
alt-Rock radio chart and the final single, "Losing A Whole Year",
weighed in at #13 on that chart.
The band's sophomore effort, "Blue", followed two and a half
years later and quickly ascended into the top 40 of The Billboard Top
200 Albums chart selling nearly two million copies and spawning four Modern
Rock top 40 hits including the #4 "Never Let You Go", "Anything",
"10 Days Late" and "Deep Inside Of You". Unfortunately,
while the rumors of Jenkins soulless corporate ownership of Third
Eye Blind eventually fizzled, those centered around the crumbling
relationship between Cadogan and his bandmates could not be so easily
dismissed. Finally, Cadogan was abruptly fired in accordance with a reportedly
unanimous vote among the remaining three members.
"Out Of The Vein", the San Francisco quartet's first album
in over three years and the first to feature new guitarist Tony Fredianelli,
arrived in May 2003; it debuted at #12 on the U.S. Top 200 Albums list,
their best chart-placing to date, but "Blinded (When I See You)"
was the only single to chart, barely entering The Modern Rock top 40 and
immediately stalling at #35.
In November 2008 Third Eye Blind released the 3-song EP "Red Star"
which included the AAA-radio single, "Non-Dairy Creamer". The
set served as a preview for the band's fourth full-length album,"Ursa
Major", which features their new single "Don't Believe A Word".
