The Alternative-Metal quartet Tool formed in Los Angeles, California USA, in 1990 with singer Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Paul D'Amour and drummer Danny Carey.

The band debuted in 1992 with the 6-track EP "Opiate" on Zoo Records; it was followed, one year later, by their first full-length disc, "Undertow", the album peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and cracked the top 50 of The Billboard 200 Sales list; its main single, "Sober", rose to the #13 slot on The Mainstream Rock chart and the second single cut, "Prison Sex", reached the #32 in the same chart pushing the album to platinum status.
After five years of playing D'Amour quit due to creative differences; he was replaced by bass player Justin Chancellor and the revamped Tool put out the second album, "Aenima", which shot to #2 on The Billboard Top 200 upon its October 1996 release, it spawned a string of four Mainstream Rock charting single including the top 20 hit "Stinkfist" plus "Forty Six & 2", "H." and the title-track, the latter of which won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
In 2000 Keenan decided to start a side project: A Perfect Circle, the band's debut album, "Mer De Noms", scored high marks with both fans and critics.
Tool re-emerged in the spring of 2001 with its biggest hit, "Lateralus"; the group's third LP soared to #1 in the U.S. and Canadian Albums charts and produced no less than three hit singles: the title-track peaked at #14 on The Mainstream Rock chart, "Schism" hit #2 on both Modern and Mainstream Rock charts winning another Grammy for Best Metal Performance; the final single, "Parabola", climbed into the top 10 of the Active Rock chart.

The band has cemented themselves in today's heavy-Rock music community with uncompromising attitude and vision; with just one EP and three album releases over a 15-year span, Tool has created a loyal and even rabid fan base, selling over 10 million albums in U.S. alone; their new studio album, "10,000 Days", released in May 2006 on Volcano, includes the Mainstream and Modern Rock top 3 smash single, "Vicarious", which stretches past the seven-minute mark.
