Blending Ska, Punk-Rock and Hip-Hop the St. Louis, Missouri USA-based
outfit The Urge was first formed in 1987 by vocalist Steve Ewing and bassist
Karl Grable; after several changes in personnel the pair recruited guitarist
Jerry Jost, saxaphonist Bill Reiter, trombonist Matt Kwiatkowski, drummer
John Pessoni and in 1996 they signed to Immoral/Epic.
That same year, in August, the band, which had already gained a solid
following through extensive touring with 311,
released its official debut album, "Receiving The Gift Of Flavor".
Two years later, with "Master Of Styles", The Urge topped The
Billboard Magazine's Top Heatseekers list and hit the #111 on the National
U.S. Top 200 chart while the lead single "Jump Right In", which
featured guest appearance by 311 frontman
Nick Hexum, smashed into the top 10 of The Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In July of 2000 the sextet issued the third and final album, "Too
Much Stereo"; the set failed to enter the top 100 in U.S. and eventually
the group broke up.
