The Southern-Rock band Van Zant was first conceived in 1985 by Johnny Van Zant, the youngest brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant and .38 Special's Donnie Van Zant.

The Rodney Mills produced LP, simply titled "Van Zant", issued on Geffen Records in 1985, was recorded with an early line-up of Johnny Van Zant on vocals, Erik Lundgren on guitar, Danny Clausman on bass and Robbie Morris on drums. The album debuted at #170 on The Billboard 200 list producing the hit "I'm A Fighter" which peaked at #16 on The Mainstream Rock chart and a further top 30 hit in the form of "You've Got To Believe In Love".
Two years later Johnny Van Zant took over the vocal duties for the resurrection of Lynyrd Skynyrd, filling the awning gap left by the death of his brother Ronnie.
A second Van Zant album, "Brother To Brother", was released on CMC International in February 1998, it marks the first time Johnny and Donnie Van Zant have ever collaborated together. The 11-song set contained the single "Rage" which reached the #22 position on The Mainstream Rock Tracks.
"Van Zant II" followed in March 2001 generating another Active Rock top 40 hit for the duo with the single "Get What You Got Comin".
More recently, the brothers crossed over into Country music, releasing the gold-certified "Get Right With The Man" on Columbia Records in May 2005. This CD peaked at #21 on The Billboard 200 and hit #2 on the Top Country Albums charts while the main single, "Help Somebody", reached the #66 spot on The Billboard Hot 100.

October 2007 saw the release of Van Zant's fifth album, "My Kind Of Country"; the set includes the single "Goes Down Easy".
