This British Hard-Rock band was formed in 1977 by ex-Deep
Purple vocalist David Coverdale; during the first years, he teamed-up
with guitarists Mick Moody and Bernie Marsden, bassist Neil Murray, keyboardist
Brian Johnston and drummer David Dowell; the group began touring throughout
Europe and Japan and released in 1978 "Snakebite". In the following
years the group released two albums with Deep
Purple members Jon Lord and Ian Paice. In 1980 appeared "Ready
An' Willing" which entered for the first time the U.S. Pop Albums
chart and featured the first U.K. top 20 hit single, "Fool For Your
Loving". One year later, "Come An' Get It", peaked at #2
in U.K. Albums chart spawning the top 20 hit "Don't Break My Heart
Again". Whitesnake returned in 1982 with the new line-up that included
Coverdale, Lord, Moody and the newcomers guitarist Mel Galley, bass player
Colin Hodgkinson and drummer Cozy Powell, the sextet released "Saints
& Sinners", the record didn't achieve much commercial success
but includes the original version of "Here I Go Again". Two
years later the band with "Slide It In" cracked The Billboard
200 chart reaching the #42 and the album went platinum, the single "Love
Ain't No Stranger" ranked in the top 40 of The Mainstream Rock chart;
shortly after this release Moody and Lord had left. In the following years
there were several personnel changes and finally in 1987 Whitesnake released
an explosive eponymous album, it peaked at #2 on The Billboard Top 200
chart selling over six million copies, it generated two British top 10
hit singles: "Is This Love" and the remix version of "Here
I Go Again", both the singles stormed The Billboard Hot 100 reaching
respectively the #2 and #1 spots; two more singles appeared in the top
30 of The Active Rock chart: "Still Of The Night" and "Give
Me All Your Love". Once again Coverdale changed the line-up and in
February of 1989 issued "Slip Of The Tongue" which crashed into
the top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and eventually was certified
platinum for sales of one million copies thanks to "Fool For Your
Loving" #2 on Mainstream Rock Tracks, "The Deeper The Love"
#4 and "Now You're Gone" #15 in the same chart. After full nine
years Coverdale ressurected the band and released "Restless Heart"
but failed to become a crossover hit on the level of its predecessors.
