Singer+guitarist & songwriter Toby Martin formed Youth Group with
drummer Danny Allen in the late '90s in Sydney, AUSTRALIA and despite
several line-up changes since, these two remain at the band's core; the
latest incarnation of the band also features guitarist Cameron Emerson-Elliott
and bassist Patrick Matthews, ex-The Vines.
Before signing with the independent label Ivy League Records, the group
had been at the forefront of the Aussie Alternative-Rock scene since their
inception; they built up a strong live following, recorded a string of
fine EPs and finally released their debut full-length album, "Urban
& Eastern", in 2000.
"Skeleton Jar", the band's second full-length disc, was released
in March 2004 in their homeland; with the album garnering four and five
star reviews, the word on Youth Group begins to spread and the band eventually
signed an international deal with legendary U.S. label Epitaph who issued
their sophomore effort in May 2005; tours in America and Europe followed,
with Death Cab For Cutie becoming
fans and offering Youth Group a support slot on a leg of its sold-out
U.S. tour in the fall; the single "Shadowland", which was played
on the TV show "The O.C.", became a moderate hit on triple-A,
Rock and Pop radio stations.
Youth Group was invited by "The O.C." to put its own stamp
on the '80s hit "Forever Young" for a crucial scene in the show;
released as a single, it peaked at #1 on the Australian ARIA Singles chart
in the first week of April 2006 and achieved double platinum sales, so
the stage was set for the band to release its third LP, "Casino Twilight
Dogs", it debuted at #10 upon its July 2006 release in Australia
and has already achieved gold status there. In the U.S. the Sydney-based
alt-Rock outfit have selected "Sorry" as the new radio single
off their third studio album, which was released on Anti Label in January
2007.
