The Atlanta, Georgia USA-based Mastodon play a form of technical Sludge/Grindcore combination that has made them a force on the worldwide Metal scene. Since forming in 1999, the band, Bill Kelliher on guitar + vocals, Brent Hinds on guitar + vocals, Troy Sanders on bass + vocals and Brann Dailor on drums, has essentially lived on the road.

After non-stop touring they decided to record a demo, which would ultimately be released in a shortened EP form on Relapse Records as "Lifeblood".
The success of the EP spurned more touring and even greater success and their first full-length album, "Remission", was finally released in 2002.

A second full-length disc, "Leviathan", followed in August 2004; the album, which propelled Mastodon into the critical limelight throughout much of 2005, hit #5 on the Billboard's Top Heatseekers and also broke into the U.S. sales chart, peaking at #139 on The Billboard 200.

The Atlanta's foursome again decided to tour as a part of the Unholy Alliance tour in the summer of 2006; the tour was a perfect opportunity to expose the band to an even wider audience and came fresh on the heels of their next release, "Blood Mountain", their Warner Bros Records debut, which was released in mid-September with the accompanying singles "Capillarian Crest" and "Colony Of Birchmen"; the latter became their first Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock entry at #33 and the album eventually peaked at #32 on The Billboard 200.

Mastodon's next album, "Crack The Skye" runs 50 minutes but features only 7 tracks, built around four-part centerpiece "The Czar"; the disc, released in March 2009, debuted at #11 on The Billboard 200 producing two Active Rock minor hits with "Divinations" and "Oblivion". That summer the quartet headed out on a European tour with Metal gods Metallica and "Crack The Skye" eventually hit the top 40 in U.K. as well as the top 20 in all Scandinavian charts.

September 2011 saw the release of another critically embraced effort: "The Hunter". It quickly catapulted into the top 10 of The Billboard 200 Albums listing while the lead-off single, "Curl Of The Burl", peaked at #27 on The Rock Songs chart.
